More time for dad duty! Kerry Washington's husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, announced his retirement from professional football on Friday, Dec. 27. The athlete confirmed the news during a conference at Oakland Raiders headquarters.
"After 11 seasons in the NFL, I will be retiring today," Asomugha announced. "I've been blessed and fortunate to have a successful NFL career," he shared at the podium. "Another journey is starting for me right now."
The 32-year-old NFL cornerback was cut by the San Francisco 49ers in early November. He signed a one-year deal with the team in April after being waived by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012.
"Life happens," the cornerback added during his press conference. "You start getting these feelings — it's time," he said. "I just felt that it was the right time."
Us Weekly exclusively broke news in late October that Washington, 36, and the athlete were expecting their first child together. The couple began dating in the summer of 2012 and secretly tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Hailey, Idaho on June 24.
Since then, the Scandal actress has been extremely tight-lipped about her pregnancy, and has yet to confirm the news herself. She's currently filming Season 3 of the ABC drama, and has only recently stepped out with her beau while celebrating her hosting gig at Saturday Night Live during an after party in NYC on Nov. 2.
"I've had a lot of support from my family," said Asomugha when a reporter asked how his wife reacted to his retirement announcement. "Everybody's just been great about it."
