Twihard for life! Kristen Stewart‘s role in The Twilight Saga didn’t win her any Oscars, but she makes no apologies for that or any other movie she’s done, regardless of how critically acclaimed it was (or wasn’t). Speaking with famed singer Patti Smith for the March issue of Interview recently, the Still Alice star said she’s “endlessly” proud of her work on the multibillion-dollar vampire franchise, haters be damned.
“Anybody who wants to talk s–t about Twilight, I completely get it, but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, f–king proud of,” the 24-year-old actress told Smith. “My memory of it felt — still feels — really good.”
Stewart was catapulted into fame — reluctantly, it seemed — when she made her debut as Bella Swan in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer‘s best-selling novel Twilight in 2008. Four sequels followed between 2009 and 2012, during which time the actress and her costar Robert Pattinson entered into a highly scrutinized relationship, culminating in a 2012 cheating scandal and their subsequent split.
Stewart has worked on several other films since then — including another blockbuster, Snow White and the Huntsman, plus the acclaimed Still Alice and Clouds of Sils Maria — but she’s best known to most as Bella. And that’s just fine with her.
“I’m always asked about what type of things I want to do, and if I make decisions based on my last project,” she told Smith. “Say I do a big franchise movie about a vampire that falls in love with a normal girl. It’s like, ‘Now do you want to show them that you can be a real, serious actor?’ It’s like, ‘Was I not being a real, serious actor?'”
She went on to say that Twilight is just as important to her career as other so-called serious movies.
“People are always comparing s–t. Like, comparing Twilight to things and trying to figure out why I’ve made certain decisions that I’ve made, and I always say every single moment that has led me to this moment has made me who I am,” she explained.
“Every movie that I’ve done, they don’t stand independently from one another because a little bit of me is in every single one of those, and it’s part of my own personal growth,” she continued. “I can’t say that Twilight doesn’t have anything to do with Still Alice and Sils Maria. They have everything to do with each other. They are who I am.”
