Well, he never could keep his opinions to himself! Marilyn Manson dug up all kinds of ‘90s nostalgia and feuds during his recent interview with Esquire, touching on Courtney Love, Smashing Pumpkins rocker Billy Corgan, and his ex-fiancee Rose McGowan.
Both Love, 50, and Manson, 46, appeared on the final season of the smash FX biker series Sons of Anarchy, which brought up rumors of old grudges.
“We didn't work any scenes together [on SOA], but I saw her on the red carpet,” he said of the former Hole singer. “Her dress broke, and I said, ‘You okay? Your p—sy didn't show, did it?’ and she said, ‘No,’ and I went, ‘Thank God! That would've been horrible!’ That was the only time I f—ked with her. Other than that, I'm cool with Courtney.”
Manson toured with Hole in 1998, but Love’s alternative rock group left the joint tour after nine performances.
"I asked myself what is the last band in the world I would ever, ever want to tour with, and it was Hole, beyond a doubt," Manson told the San Francisco Examiner before Hole's exit in 1999. "But then I thought, I love a challenge, I like to surround myself with aggravation, it helps me perform better. And I thought, well, here's a chance to show Courtney the difference between being a celebrity and being a real rock star."
Despite reports of a feud, Manson continues to assert there never was one, nor was there any sexual tension, on his side, at least.
“We never really had a falling out,” he told Esquire. “We've always been weird with each other, because she's slept with pretty much every one of my friends, supposedly. Not me, though. She, one time, told me she was mad at me because I didn't want to f—k her and I was smarter than her. I said, ‘Well, you kind of proved your own point right there on that one.’”
Not one to shy away from controversy, Love took to Twitter after Manson’s interview was published, writing, “Omg @marilynmanson all this time thought u’re gay. Of course I’ll f—k u. Im free Fri from 1:15 to 1:18 gives us plenty time 4 a smoke too x.”
Though the two artists were never romantically involved, Love was linked to Manson’s longtime friend and Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan. The pair dated in 1991, prior to Love’s marriage to the late Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain. Then after Cobain committed suicide in 1994, there were rumors Corgan, now 47, and Love rekindled their romance. In 2006, Corgan moved into the home Love shared with her daughter Frances Bean Cobain.
For much of that time, rumors of a Corgan and Manson falling-out circulated. It turns out Corgan had offered the “Deep Six” rocker some sage advice, which indeed led to a rift.
“A lot of people think there was some kind of falling out,” Manson said of the friendship. “It was mostly that he wrote a strongly worded letter about how Rose McGowan would ruin my life and ruin my career if I stayed with her, which was good advice, and he wrote it as a letter, which is very polite. There is sort of a guy code that I abide by where he totally offered his advice, and he was genuinely just looking out for my best interests. I hadn't seen him in 15 years. I had forgotten how close we were, having not seen him in so long. He's the one who taught me how to play guitar, so if it sucks or it's good, it's his fault.”
Manson was engaged to actress McGowan, 41, for two years until they split in 2001. McGowan married artist Davey Detail in October 2013, while Manson went on to have several highly publicized romances with Dita Von Teese and Evan Rachel Wood.
