Serena Williams Makes Her Way to Prince Harry and Friend Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding

She knows a thing or two about love! Serena Williams arrived at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday, May 19, to watch her friend Meghan Markle marry Prince Harry.

Williams was photographed wearing a long-sleeve blush cocktail dress with a matching fascinator. Her hair was in a long braided ponytail. She showed off her ensemble on Instagram before departing for the ceremony.

The tennis player shared a picture of herself wrapped in a towel on Twitter earlier in the day. “Check out my IG stories today,” she wrote. “I’m getting ready for my friends wedding.” She also posted a photo of herself, husband Alexis Ohanian and daughter Alexis Olympia all decked out for the nuptials.

Williams wasn’t sure she would be able to attend the royal wedding when she appeared on Good Morning America in April. “We’ll see if I can make it,” she said at the time. The nuptials coincide with one of the 36-year-old’s tournaments.

However, the newlywed — she married entrepreneur Ohanian in November 2017 — did offer her friend some advice. “I just think it’s so important to enjoy the moment,” Williams said on GMA. “You know, and eat cake. I didn’t get to eat mine at the wedding.” Markle, 36, did not attend the Grand Slam winner’s big day because she was filming Suits.

Markle and Williams “hit it off immediately” when they met in 2014, the future royal previously revealed on her lifestyle blog The Tig. The pair have supported each other ever since, with the athlete writing posts for Markle’s site and the former actress watching as Williams played at the U.S. Open and Australian Open. The bride has even referred to the tennis champion as her “closest friend.”

The former actress opted not to have a maid of honor in her wedding party, though. “She has a very close circle of friends and she could not just choose one,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said in a statement earlier this month. “They will all be traveling to London that week to spend some quality time with her and she is pleased to have all their support there on her wedding day.”

Markle, however, will be surrounded by her friends’ children. Along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, pal Jessica Mulroney’s three kids and Markle’s two goddaughters will serve as bridesmaids and page boys.
