He brought the pain. WWE star Randy Orton had to get 10 staples in his head following a vicious, bloody SummerSlam match against Brock Lesnar on Sunday, August 21.
“WWE.com has learned that Randy Orton received 10 staples to close a laceration on his forehead following the brutal assault by Brock Lesnar that resulted in a TKO at SummerSlam,” the wrestling company said in a statement on its website on Monday, August 22.
Several minutes into the wrestlers’ match, Lesnar, who is also a UFC fighter, took Orton down to the ground and started elbowing him in the head. As blood started coming out of Orton’s head, he attempted to cover himself with his arms, but Lesnar continued hitting his opponent until the match was called off by a referee.
Graphic videos of the moment — which aired live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on the pay-per-view channel WWE Network — quickly went viral, sparking equally graphic commentary from several Twitter users.
“Don’t know about you, but I think Brock Lesnar gave Randy Orton a pretty purposeful downward elbow to the head here,” one fan wrote. Another added, “Orton’s skull sounded like it was hit with a baseball bat.”
Some viewers also took to social media to question whether Lesnar went “off script” and deliberately hurt his rival.
“#Summerslam finish was hard to figure out. Felt like @BrockLesnar went off script and did this to @RandyOrton,” one user tweeted.

Although the the Apex Predator and the Beast Incarnate trained together years ago at Ohio Valley Wrestling, Sunday night’s match was only their second time ever competing against one another in the WWE ring.
