Duff and Koma hit it off in 2015 — one year after Duff split from ex-husband Mike Comrie, with whom she shares son Luca — while collaborating on the Lizzie McGuire alum’s album Breathe In. Breathe Out. "They had great chemistry in the studio," a source close to Duff told Us at the time. "Hilary thinks Matt is very talented and cute."

"I’m really the luckiest to get to do this life thing with you. Duff and Koma celebrated their five-year wedding anniversary.

The actress shared a sweet message regarding the relationship milestone via Instagram Stories. "Five years down," Duff wrote, alongside a photo of her husband. "Forever to go.”

Koma shared his own post with photos from their wedding and a lengthy caption.

“5 years married today to my dream girl & my best friend. As I lay next to you in bed, purely exhausted after our third consecutive 14 hour day of taking our 4 kids skiing - I feel like the luckiest. You chose me to do the impossible with,” he wrote, in part. “And as we navigate through the truly IN IT years, I think the most exciting thing is knowing on the other side of this, we get each other. You’re my favorite person to do absolutely anything and everything with. Duff shared a lengthy message alongside several Instagram photos of Koma in celebration of his 38th birthday. “My sweet insta poet - I can’t compete with your compilation of words but I can share that every one of my days are comfier, funnier, sturdier, and more balanced with you in them,” she wrote. “We have celebrated a lot of June 2nds together and since slide nine we’ve tripled in size.”

Stating that she’s “so proud of us,” Duff continued, “Making it through some of these days seems impossible but you are always there to cook or pack a meal, keep us caffeinated, carry all the bags, let me add one more stop/plan to our day, have a last minute party, or add a new animal into our already pulling at the seams life. Koma gushed about Duff in a lengthy 38th birthday shoutout.

“Happy birthday to my childhood crush, Janeane Garofalo, and to my best friend in the entire world @hilaryduff,” he began. “My favorite part about this day is how the people in your life get a chance to give you your flowers, and tell you how insanely much you mean to us. You make everybody feel like the center of your universe. Your friends, your kids, your family.”

Koma praised his wife’s ability to be “so present” with her loved ones despite her busy schedule. 

“You are everything good and bright on this space rock … and to wake up every morning, getting to face our days together, is winning the lottery again and again. Doing real life with you is my happy place, and makes everything outside of it seem simultaneously within the closest of reach and completely unimportant at the same time,” he continued. 

Koma also expressed his delight in helping Duff with her upcoming album.

“Working on your album with you this year, on your terms, framed how it works for you, has been the f***ing best, and I can’t wait for the world to hear what it sounds like when you get to speak directly to your people without anything or anyone standing in the way,” he added. “This year’s going to be everything — high, low, overwhelming, scary, thrilling, exciting, full … and I have all the faith you’ll do it in only the way you can.”

Koma commemorated his and Duff’s sixth wedding anniversary with a playful message. “6 years my wifey. And they said we wouldn’t make it. Literally everyone said, ‘They won’t make it.’ OK just that guy in the Just Jared comment section but f*** him we’re crushing. Being married to you is like eating Taco Bell in the late 90’s,” Koma wrote via his Instagram Story at the time.

He continued, “I never know which you I’m gonna get but it’s largely the same ingredients and the euphoria outweighs the tummy discomfort. And you always look cool and I get really excited when someone says, ‘We’re going to get a meximelt.’ I love you, our kids are screaming at each other and Mae just ripped a Ken doll’s head of.”

Duff reposted the message and a picture of the duo cutting cake on their wedding night via her own Instagram Story, writing, "It's so hot being compared to Taco Bell. He always gets the assignment.”

After Ashley Tisdale French wrote an essay for The Cut about leaving her “toxic” mom group, which included Duff, Mandy Moore and Meghan Trainor, Koma came to his wife’s defense.

“A mom group tell-all through a father’s eyes,” Koma wrote via his Instagram Story as a fictional magazine headline, trolling French’s similar looking cover. “When you’re the most self obsessed tone deaf person on earth, other moms tend to shift focus to their actual toddlers.”

The text was written atop a photo of Koma posing seriously on a couch for the camera while the logo of New York Magazine‘s fashion vertical was inserted to the top of the photo. “Read my new interview with @thecut,” Koma joked.

Duff later addressed Koma’s cheeky post, explaining on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast one month later, “Honestly, everything he does makes me laugh. So, I was like, ‘Oh my god. Oh my god.’ But I also don’t censor him and I don’t tell him what he can and can’t post. He is so fierce for me and I love him for that.”

When Duff decided to return to music with her sixth studio album, Luck... or Something, she enlisted her husband’s expertise as a producer of the record.

While promoting the album, Duff confessed to Rolling Stone, “I always think Matt’s going to leave me for some coolio indie songwriter that he works with.” Koma responded, “Which is so insane,” noting that his wife’s feelings are “real” and something you could “get hung up on emotionally.”

That same month, Duff told pal Dakota Fanning in an interview for Interview magazine that people questioned how she and Koma could work and live together.

“Everyone’s like, ‘How is it working with your husband? Do you guys fight a lot?’” Duff recalled. “I’m like, ‘We literally never fight.’”

She then clarified that the couple do have “one drag-out fight once a year,” the last one ending with Duff throwing Koma’s phone “in a Bougainvillea bush,” which she confessed “felt so good.”

Despite their rare fights, Duff said that having Koma “in my corner” feels like “we’re such a unit” and she no longer has to be a “lone rider.”

“I wasn’t interested in making a record with anyone else. I was like, ‘It has to just be me and you,’” she added. “The most honest stuff came from that because he has a front row to my life and everything I’ve experienced, the really difficult times and the really easy good times that made me who I am.”
