Miller opened up about abusing the antihistamine promethazine, also known as lean, after his album Blue Slide Park was criticized. “I love lean; it’s great … I was not happy and I was on lean very heavy,” he told Complex in January 2013. “I was so f--ked up all the time it was bad. My friends couldn’t even look at me the same. I was lost.”

In his 2014 track “What Do You Do,” Miller rapped about Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died from combined drug intoxication in February of that year: “A drug habit like Philip Hoffman will probably put me in a coffin.”

The “Dang!” rapper talked to Billboard in August 2015 about his fear of dying. “I was too worried about the legacy that I would leave behind — how I would be remembered if I died. That was my whole thing. Like, you never know, man, so I’ve got to make sure I make all this music so when I die there’s albums and albums,” he said at the time. “But now, I’m going to make sure I do some s--t in life, too.” Miller also admitted he was doing fewer drugs at the time, but was still not completely sober.

The musician released a new single titled “Self Care” in July 2018 in which he rapped about improving his life. “I been losin’ my, I been losin’ my, I been losin’ my mind, yeah / Get the f--k out the way, must be this high to play,” the lyrics read. “Somebody save me from myself, yeah / Tell them they can take that bulls--t elsewhere / Self care, we gonna be good.”

Miller was arrested for driving under the influence and hit-and-run charges after he allegedly drove his car into a utility pole, knocked it over and fled the scene in May 2018. “I made a stupid mistake,” he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in July 2018. “I’m a human being. Like, [I] drove home drunk. But it was the best thing that could have happened. … I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally, like, have the whole thing stop.”

Following his breakup with girlfriend Ariana Grande in May 2018, Miller spoke about the split in his interview with Lowe. “Life is stressful, so of course there were stressful times. It’s not that unique,” he explained at the time. “I was in love with somebody. We were together for two years. We worked through good times, bad times, stress and everything else. And then it came to an end and we both moved on. And it’s that simple.”

The MC denied being an addict while speaking about his past drug use, which included cocaine, in an interview published one month before his death. “If a bunch of people think I am a huge drug addict, OK. Cool. What can I really do? Go talk to all those people and be like, ‘Naw man, it’s really not that simple?’” he remarked to Rolling Stone in August 2018. “Have I done drugs? Yeah. But am I a drug addict? No.”

In a Vulture interview published one day before his death, Miller discussed the expectations surrounding him as a public figure and his early career. “I used to rap super openly about really dark s--t because that’s what I was experiencing at the time,” he revealed. “That’s fine, that’s good, that’s life. It should be all the emotions.”
