Kerry Washington made a radiant return to the red carpet after secretly marrying San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha earlier this summer. Wearing an orange and white Giambattista Valli dress, the Scandal star — who never announced an engagement — flashed her wedding band for the first time ever while posing for photographers at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour Disney/ABC party in Beverly Hills on Sunday, Aug. 4.
Washington, 36, completed her look with Christian Louboutin heels, Vhernier earrings and a Nancy Gonzalez bag. As expected, the notoriously tight-lipped star didn’t share any details regarding her June 24 wedding. The actress did, however, praise show creator Shonda Rhimes for making diversity a priority on the primetime ABC hit. “Our show is diverse in terms of gender, age, sexual orientation, in terms of ethnicity, in terms of religion,” Washington told Us Weekly. “That, to me, is really one of the things that’s special to me.”
During the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in L.A. Sept. 22, Washington will compete in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category against Connie Britton (Nashville), Claire Danes (Homeland), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Robin Wright (House of Cards). “It’s pretty extraordinary what’s going on,” Washington admitted. “I feel really grateful for the show. I love celebrating with the whole cast together.”
In addition to celebrating Washington’s first-ever Primetime Emmy Award nomination, the stars of Scandal are also celebrating the actress’ recent nuptials to Asomugha, 31. “I’m just thrilled for her,” said Tony Goldwyn, who plays her married love interest, President Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III. “She’s so happy!”
Though Washington keeps her personal life private, Goldwyn revealed that he “sensed [a wedding] was on the way.” The actor also told Us he will refrain from sharing marital tips with the newlywed. “Having been married for a very long time, I’m knowledgable enough to know that I can offer her no advice!”
