Forget Spider-Man: Brand New Day – it’s a brand new week here at Watch With Us, which means a slew of new shows and movies you should be watching.
Hulu is already streaming Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, an off-kilter comedy about male bonding, Orbitz and time travel.
Later in the week, Netflix will debut its next bingeworthy reality show, Let’s Marry Harry, starring Too Hot to Handle alum Harry Jowsey, while Apple TV is inviting football comedy fans back to watch Ted Lasso inspire yet another underdog sports team.
On August 6, Netflix turns up the teen angst in My Life with the Walter Boys season 3, which is kinda like Yellowstone for the YA tween age group.
‘Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie’ (Hulu) – Now Streaming
All Toronto musicians Matt Johnson (Matt Johnson) and Jay McCarrol (Jay McCarrol) want to do is play a show at the historic venue, the Rivoli, which will solidify their band, Nirvanna the Band, as an act to watch. Yet when they pack their RV to travel to Ottawa, something odd happens – they travel back in time to 2008! When they interact with their younger selves, they realize maybe they shouldn’t have formed a band in the first place and alter time so they go their separate ways. But in this new present, one friend finds fame hollow while another is broke and alone. Will they both realize that what they’ve been looking for all along has been right in front of their faces?
Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is an adaptation of the cult series Nirvanna the Band the Show, and it’s as shaggy and loopy as the title suggests. Shot in Canada and made by Canadians, it sports that nation’s odd, folksy humor, and its guerrilla-style filmmaking makes the far-out concept of time travel seem somewhat believable. If you’re craving a slightly bizarre take on Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is the ideal movie to stream.
‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 (Apple TV) – August 5
Just when you thought it was over, the AFC Richmond crew pulls you back in. Yes, Ted Lasso is back, and the beloved Apple TV series is determined to kill entertain you with kindness all over again. In season 4, the show changes things up a bit by focusing on Richmond’s women’s soccer team, who are every bit as winless and desperate as their male counterparts were in season 1. Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) wants to change that, but even his positive reinforcement and unconventional coaching methods may not be enough to put his team in the winner’s circle.
Ted Lasso’s main strength was its deep-bench cast, so it’s a relief to see fan-favorites Hannah Waddingham (as team owner Rebecca Welton), Jeremy Swift (as Leslie Higgins), Brett Goldstein (as Roy Kent), Brendan Hunt (as Coach Willis Beard) and Juno Temple (as Keeley Jones) return to support Sudeikis’ hapless Ted. Not everyone is back, though – Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt), Nick Mohammed (Nate Shelley), Sarah Niles (Dr. Sharon M. Fieldstone), the late Anthony Head (Rupert Mannion), Toheeb Jimoh (Sam Obisanya), Cristo Fernández (Dani Rojas), Kola Bokinni (Isaac McAdoo), Billy Harris (Colin Hughes) and James Lance (Trent Crimm) have all been benched this season. Still, Ted Lasso season 4 has enough of the old to make its new storyline and cast members palatable, and it’s bound to brighten the dog days of summer.
‘Let’s Marry Harry’ Season 1 (Netflix) – August 5
Australian heartthrob Harry Jowsey has been a reality TV mainstay for a few years now, appearing on such popular shows as Too Hot to Handle and The Perfect Match. But he’s now taking on his biggest role to date – headlining Netflix’s version of The Bachelor. In Let’s Marry Harry, Jowsey is looking for love in the right place – or rather, a reality dating competition show where he’ll date 20 women and decide which contestant is The One.
Helping him choose a wife are his best friend and former The Talk co-host Amanda Kloots, ex-girlfriend Georgia Hassarati, and best bro Sonny Henty, but the final decision is Harry’s to make. Will he find the right woman for him? Or will his heart be broken again and provide more material for his podcast, Boyfriend Material with Harry Jowsey? Let’s Marry Harry’s first seven episodes drop August 5, and the eighth and final episode debuts a week later on August 12.
‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ Season 3 (Netflix) – August 6
Last season, My Life with the Walter Boys ended on a cliffhanger so dramatic, fans have been waiting with bated breath to watch the aftermath. In case you forgot, here’s what happened: Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) and Cole (Noah LaLonde) finally confessed their feelings for each other, but Alex (Ashby Gentry) — Cole’s brother and Jackie’s boyfriend — overheard it. Oops! Things got even more dramatic when this awkward love triangle was interrupted by the arrival of an ambulance to rush Cole and Alex’s dad, George (Marc Blucas), to the hospital.
Season 3 will continue to chronicle the fallout of Jackie and Cole’s confession. Alex finds solace in his new rodeo riding team, while Cole is mentored by a race car driver who sees a future for him on the racetrack. In addition to nursing a conflicted heart, Jackie also has to deal with a friend from the past who visits the ranch – and brings up skeletons that are best left in the closet. All 10 episodes of My Life with the Walter Boys season 3 drop on August 6.
