Fall TV Preview 2020: A Guide to All the New Shows to Watch

It's no secret that fall TV is going to look a bit different this year. With so many shows pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic, the schedule has been changed. That said, shows that had previously been put on pause — Fox's neXt and Filthy Rich were originally set to air last fall but were held — have been moved up to debut this season. Plus, there are many shows that were filmed pre-pandemic — and one that was shot during — that will be introduced for the first time, beginning now. One of those new shows includes HBO Max's The Flight Attendant, in which Kaley Cuoco will return to TV following the long-running comedy The Big Bang Theory. "I love making people laugh, but it’s been an incredible experience working my dramatic muscles," she tells Us exclusively about taking on the series' lead role of Cassie — a flight attendant who wakes up next to a dead body with no memory of what happened. "This cast is so experienced and has surrounded me with so much support. They make me feel like I can do anything." The drama has been three years in the making and Cuoco, 34, has "been extremely involved since day one," she says — "from music choices to the shoes on my feet." Overall, the executive producer has been feeling the support: "The team around me is so strong. This experience has challenged me to ask questions and know it’s OK to say, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing! Someone help me.'" Transplant

NBC’s medical drama features Hamza Haq as Dr. Bashir “Bash” Hamed, a Syrian doctor who flees his war-torn home for a better life in Canada. He lands a job at a hospital, but his battle-tested skills are unlike any of his colleagues’ — making it hard to secure a residency. (Tuesdays, 10 P.M.)

Away

Grab the tissues! In Netflix’s new space drama, astronaut Emma (Hilary Swank) — who’s also a wife and mother— leads a group mission to Mars. But before and during the epic journey, she must come to terms with leaving behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter at a pivotal time in both their lives. (September 4)

Power Book II: Ghost

Following the events in Starz’s series Power, this spinoff focuses on Ghost’s son, Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.), who’s dealing with his dad’s death and learning how to survive while his mom’s in prison. Like father, like son: Tariq turns to street life and must figure out right from wrong. (September 6, 9 p.m. ET.)

Woke

New Girl’s Lamorne Morris leads this Hulu comedy inspired by the life of political artist Keith Knight. The timely, partially animated series follows cartoonist Keef, who — after an unexpected incident with the police — develops a new outlook on culture and identity. (September 9)

Julie and the Phantoms

High School Musical director Kenny Ortega has struck gold again with this Netflix series, which follows Julie (Madison Reyes), a musician who struggles to get back to her art after the death of her mother. Then she meets three rockin’ teenage ghosts only she can see, and everything changes. (September 10)

The Duchess

Katherine Ryan, the creator, executive producer and writer of this Netflix comedy, also stars as a single mother who loves her preteen daughter, Olivia, so much, she wants to get pregnant again by Olivia’s father — who, by the way, is her ex. (September 11)

Coastal Elites

This one hits close to home: HBO Max’s satire, which was shot virtually, follows the lives of five individuals in New York or L.A. as they navigate life amid the coronavirus pandemic. Bette Midler, Sarah Paulson, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy and Issa Rae star. (September 12, 8 p.m. ET)

Ratched

Ever wonder how the infamous "Big Nurse" from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest became such a heartless tyrant? Ryan Murphy’s twisted Netflix drama examines the upbringing of Ken Kesey’s infamous caretaker, and Sarah Paulson skillfully steps into her candy striper uniform to create a compelling monster. (September 18)

Filthy Rich

Originally ordered for 2019, Fox’s soapy drama follows a Southern family with a Christian TV empire. After the founder (Gerald McRaney) dies in a plane crash, his wife (Kim Cattrall) is left to pick up the pieces — and deal with her husband’s secrets. (September 21, 9 p.m. ET)

Emily in Paris

Sex and the City boss Darren Star draws Us in with a Netflix drama about Emily (Lily Collins), who lands her dream marketing job in Paris. In the 10 episodes (all filmed in France), Emily juggles bolstering her career with finding friends — and romance, duh — in the City of Lights. (October 2)

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

This AMC limited series, starring Younger’s Nico Tortorella and The Americans’ Annet Mahendru, is centered on the kids born into the zombie apocalypse. With the end of the world imminent, the brave group must fight to ensure they’re not the last generation. (October 4, 10 p.m. ET)

neXt

John Slattery stars as a tech pioneer in this Fox sci-fi thriller from 24 producer Manny Coto, in which humankind is at risk after the emergence of a dangerous artificial intelligence dubbed Next. Be warned: This one may make you want to unplug your Alexa. (October 6, 9 p.m. ET)

Devils

This financial thriller tells the story of investment banker Massimo (Alessandro Borghi) and his mentor and boss, Dominic (Patrick Dempsey). Throw in some backstabbing and a murder investigation and you’ve got another CW hit. (October 7, 8 p.m. ET)

The Right Stuff

Based on Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book (which became an Oscar-winning flick in 1983), this Disney+ series tells the tale of America’s first astronauts, the “Mercury Seven,” and how they fared after their missions. Patrick J. Adams, Jake McDorman, Colin O’Donoghue and James Lafferty star. (October 9)

The Haunting of Bly Manor

In the next chapter of Netflix’s Haunting anthology, American nanny Dani (You's Victoria Pedretti) is hired to look after two orphaned children in England following the shocking death of their au pair. But once she arrives at their home, Bly Manor, she realizes she’s not alone. (October 9)

The Flight Attendant

"I got a chill,” Cuoco tells Us about the first time she read about this HBO Max miniseries based on Chris Bohjalian’s novel. The story follows party-animal Cassie (Cuoco, above with costar Rosie Perez), who wakes up next to a dead man and has to figure out what happened. “It’s a good mix of drama and dark comedy,” she says. “Plus, a complicated female character is a dream role!” As for how she relates to her character? “We both love our cocktails!” (TBD)

The Amber Ruffin Show

Peacock’s weekly late-night show will be led by Late Night With Seth Meyers writer and performer Amber Ruffin. In addition to discussing what’s going on in the world, Ruffin will do what she does best — mixing gravitas with nonsense. (TBD)

The Murders at White House Farm

HBO Max’s dramatized true-crime series chronicles the events leading up to and following Jeremy Bamber’s murder of three generations of his family at their farmhouse in Essex, England, in 1985. Stephen Graham, Freddie Fox and Cressida Bonas star. (TBD)
