Roll out the red carpet! Movie lovers are already expecting the 2023 Academy Awards to be a star-studded affair. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in May 2022 that the 95th annual Oscars would be held the following March, returning to Hollywood's iconic Dolby Theatre. Six months later, Jimmy Kimmel was confirmed as the 2023 host. "Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang called Kimmel "the perfect host," while ABC exec Craig Erwich praised the Brooklyn native's poise under pressure. The actors were initially handed the wrong envelope before revealing Moonlight as the official winner. Kimmel returned to host one year later, and the 2018 ceremony was smooth sailing. In 2022, the Oscars were led by a trio of hosts: Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. Ahead of the big night, Kimmel joked about the unique setup. "I got paid $15,000 to host the Oscars and there's one of me," he told Sykes on his show in March 2022. "You guys will probably have to split that. ... You're getting robbed." However, the most memorable moment from the 94th Academy Awards had little to do with the three hosts. When Chris Rock was presenting a trophy, he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head — and Will Smith stormed the stage in her defense. The King Richard star, who went on to win best actor that night, slapped Rock across the face during the broadcast. After issuing a public apology, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum was banned from all Academy events for the next 10 years. He also resigned from the organization. The controversy continued to be a hot topic at other awards shows throughout the year. Trevor Noah opened the 2022 Grammys with a reference to the incident, while the organizers of the 2022 Tony Awards reportedly reminded attendees that the event "has a strict no violence policy." How With the Oscars Avoid Another Potential Slap?

“Things don’t always go as planned. So you have a host in place who can really pivot and manage those moments,” Oscars CEO Bill Kramer told Time in February 2023. “But we have a whole crisis team, something we’ve never had before, and many plans in place. We’ve run many scenarios. So it is our hope that we will be prepared for anything that we may not anticipate right now but that we’re planning for just in case it does happen.”

He added at the time: “Because of last year, we’ve opened our minds to the many things that can happen at the Oscars. But these crisis plans — the crisis communication teams and structures we have in place — allow us to say, this is the group that we have to gather very quickly. This is how we all come together. This is the spokesperson. This will be the statement. And obviously depending on the specifics of the crisis, and let’s hope something doesn’t happen and we never have to use these, but we already have frameworks in place that we can modify.”

Who Is Nominated?

Nominations have not yet been announced, but the 2023 Oscars will honor the best and brightest of films released in 2022. The Whale, The Fabelmans, Elvis and Everything Everywhere All at Once are strong contenders for top trophies. The official list will be revealed in January 2023.

How Will the Oscars Move on From the Slap?

Despite the drama that ensued during the 2022 ceremony, ABC was pleased with the broadcast. "My assessment of the Oscars was that it was really a successful year for the show," Erwich told Deadline in May 2022. "Obviously there was a lot of controversy, which overshadowed a lot of the positive things about the show, but I was really happy with the program. Even before that very unfortunate moment, the show started off up year over year, and we came back in a big way."

At the time, the network's president of entertainment hinted that the 2023 Oscars will be "even better," adding: "There's always things to learn."

Kimmel, for his part, thinks the topic is unavoidable. "It's got to come up in some way," he told Extra in November 2022. "You know, I don't want to really make light of it necessarily, because it wasn't [light] to comedians. You know, comedians are mad about it. ... It's like, it's one of those things that for a group of people that find everything funny, it's, like, not funny, you know? But of course ... when they read the wrong winner one year when I hosted the Oscars, we had to make mention of that the next year."

Will All Categories Air During the Live Broadcast?

In November 2022, Kramer confirmed that all 23 award categories would be included during the live telecast in 2023. The 2022 ceremony omitted eight categories, including film editing, sound and production design. "I can confirm that all categories will be included in the live telecast," Kramer told Variety. "We are committed to having a show that celebrates the artisans, the arts and sciences and the collaborative nature of moviemaking. This is very much what the mission of the Academy is, and I am very hopeful that we can do a show that celebrates all components of moviemaking in an entertaining and engaging way."

Who Is Performing?

In February 2023, Rihanna was announced as one of the first performers for the awards show. The Fenty founder will sing her Oscar-nominated song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

One day later, it was revealed that Sofia Carson and Diane Warren will also take the stage at the Oscars to perform their song “Applause” — which is nominated for Best Original Song — from the film Tell It Like a Woman.
