Zoinks! Scooby-Doo brought new life to Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang nearly four decades after fans were first introduced to the beloved cartoon Scooby-Doo Where Are You! Viewers met the Great Dane Scooby and his pals Shaggy, Velma, Fred and Daphne in 1969 — but it wasn’t until 2002 that the characters got a live-action makeover. The film, which starred Matthew Lillard (Shaggy), Linda Cardellini (Velma), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Fred) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Daphne), stayed true to the cartoon in many ways, especially when it came to the bond between the crime-solving crew. “I think the popularity lies in the fact that Scooby and Shaggy are unlikely heroes,” Cardellini told Hollywood.com ahead of the film’s 2002 premiere. “They’re cowards.” Gellar, who got engaged to Prinze Jr. the same year the movie was filmed, noted that the original series “offered so much more than any other cartoon.” She added: “It was so ahead of its time.” Prinze Jr. revealed during a 2002 appearance on TRL that he really embraced the character of Fred — he even dyed his hair blond. “In the cartoon he was a little bit egotistical,” he explained to host Carson Daly. “As an actor you see that as a chance to be as narcissistic as humanly possible so that’s what I tried to bring.” While the 2002 movie kicked off with the group at odds, the mystery-solving gang learns to put aside their petty issues after being lured to Spooky Island to solve a case. After Scooby’s (voiced by Neil Fanning) soul is nearly stolen by his cousin Scrappy Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Fred and Daphne realize they must come together to defeat the bad guys as a team. She doesn’t quite get the credit she deserves so she’s been bottling up a lot of emotions.” Gellar chimed in with details about her character, revealing, “Daphne is the perennial damsel in distress. But my Daphne is the hero.” Lillard, for his part, told Hollywood.com in 2002 that he channeled his inner Shaggy way before filming began. “When it came to the voice and it came to the walk I spent a lot of time with the cartoon,” he explained. The Scream actor noted that embodying the character meant eating lots of Scooby snacks, which aren’t as tasty as they sound. “Scooby snacks actually taste like cardboard,” Lillard confessed. “It tastes like wet cardboard. Isn’t that delicious?” The cast’s reinvention of the classic cartoon led to the 2004 sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. The characters have also been part of multiple animated series over the past few decades. In 2021, Mindy Kaling announced that she was creating a Scooby-Doo spinoff series for HBO Max called Velma, which will center around the turtleneck-loving character. Matthew Lillard

Lillard played Scooby’s BFF, Shaggy, in both live-action Scooby-Doo films. The Michigan native continued the role by voicing the character for video games, animated movies and multiple TV shows, including Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Lillard has also had success on TV, portraying Daniel Frye on The Bridge, Luke on Bosch and Dean Boland on Good Girls. In 2021, the actor reunited with She’s All That costar Rachael Leigh Cook for He’s All That. The Scream star has voiced multiple characters on Robot Chicken since 2015.

The Summer Catch actor married Heather Helm in 2000. The couple share three children: Addison, Liam and Macey.

Freddie Prinze Jr.

Prinze Jr. reunited with She’s All That costar Lillard for the Scooby-Doo films, playing the bossy but handsome Fred. The California native later starred on Freddie, 24, GEGG WARS: Galaxy of Crime and 2021’s revival of Punky Brewster. He also voiced Kanan Jarrus on the animated series Star Wars: Rebels and multiple characters on Robot Chicken. The Summer Catch star was an executive producer and writer on his series Freddie in the early 2000s and went on to write more than 20 episodes for WWE Smackdown! He launched his “Wrestling With Freddie” podcast in November 2021.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer actor married Gellar in 2002. The pair share two children: daughter Charlotte and son Rocky.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Gellar portrayed the fashionable Daphne, who often broke off with Fred to solve mysteries. The New York native filmed the Scooby-Doo films amid her run as Buffy Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003. Gellar appeared in The Grudge, The Grudge 2, The Return and The Air I Breathe. She also starred on All My Children, Ringer (where she served as an executive producer), The Crazy Ones, Star Wars: Rebels, Robot Chicken and Masters of the Universe: Revelation. In 2015, Gellar cofounded the baking kits startup Foodstirs. Two years later, she released her cookbook, Stirring Up Fun With Food.

The Cruel Intentions star married Prinze Jr. in 2002 after meeting on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Gellar shares daughter Charlotte and son Rocky, with her husband.

Linda Cardellini

Cardellini played brainy Velma in both live-action movies. She then switched most of her focus to TV roles, starring on ER, The Goode Family, Mad Men, Bloodline, Muppets Now, Hawkeye and Dead to Me. Cardellini voiced multiple characters on Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Out There, Regular Show, Gravity Falls and Sanjay and Craig. The California native’s movie credits include Brokeback Mountain, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Daddy’s Home, A Simple Favor, Avengers: Endgame and Capone. The Legally Blonde actress made her producer debut in 2019 with Netflix’s Dead to Me, serving as a co-executive producer on both seasons.

The Freaks and Geeks alum dated costar Jason Segel for five years before splitting in 2007. Cardellini moved on with Steve Rodriguez in 2009. The duo share one child, daughter Lilah-Rose Rodriguez, whom they welcomed in 2012.

Neil Fanning

Fanning’s role as the voice of Scooby was his first big screen role. He continued to voice the lovable pooch in Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, two Scooby-Doo video games, the Scooby-Doo’s Triple Threat Featurette video short and Dancing Dog: How They Made Scooby Doo Dance music video. The Australia native’s entertainment work also includes stunts in Ghost Ship, The Great Raid, Daybreakers and 2018’s Tidelands. In addition to Hollywood gigs, Fanning has training as a stunt driving instructor and has worked as a safety manager in numerous industries.

The former manager of the Police Academy Stunt Show is the father of three.

Rowan Atkinson

Atkinson portrayed Emile Mondavarious, who is used by Scrappy Doo to lure the Mystery Inc. gang to Spooky Island in hopes of taking them down once and for all. The British actor then appeared in Johnny English, Love Actually, Keeping Mum, Johnny English Reborn and Johnny English Strikes Again. The comedian has also starred on Blackadder and Maigret. Atkinson is best known for his role as Mr. Bean in films such as Mr. Bean’s Holiday and the TV shows Mr. Bean: The Animated Series and Handy Bean. The actor has 17 writing credits to his name, including Mr. Bean Takes an Exam and seven episodes of Blackadder, and served as an executive producer on Mr. Bean: The Animated Series.

Atkinson was married to Sunetra Sastry for 24 years before they split in 2014. The exes share two children, son Benjamin and daughter Lily. The England native has been dating Louise Ford since 2014. They share daughter Isla.

Isla Fisher

Fisher played Mary Jane, a tourist on Spooky Island who falls for Shaggy. The Oman native went on to star in I Heart Huckabees, Wedding Crashers, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Now You See Me, Nocturnal Animals, The Beach Bum, Greed and Godmothered. Her TV roles include portraying Rebel Ally on Arrested Development. She made her debut as a producer on 2022’s Wolf Like Me, in which she also plays woman-turned-werewolf Mary. Fisher penned her first children’s book, Marge in Charge, in 2016, and has since released five more installments in the franchise.

The Home and Away alum married Sacha Baron Cohen in 2010. The couple share three children: daughters Olive and Elula and son Montgomery.
