Let’s all scream for ice cream! PetSmart is ensuring dogs don’t get left out of the National Ice Cream Day fun.
The pet store will be giving away free dog-friendly ice cream at PetSmart PetsHotels locations in North America on Saturday, July 14, and Sunday, July 15, to celebrate this most important holiday. Pups who stop by during store hours can receive a 4 oz complimentary frozen treat.
PetSmart typically offers free ice cream only on the actual holiday, but this year, they’re extending their celebration throughout the entire weekend.
And if pets love what they taste, good news: PetSmart’s dog-safe ice cream is available as an add-on treat service at Doggie Day Camp and during overnight stays.
For those who are not able to make it to a PetSmart PetsHotels location over the weekend, the company offers a few ice cream recipes pet owners can make at home.
To create peanut butter treat ice cream, mix 1 cup plain yogurt (or low-fat yogurt if the dog is watching his figure), 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter and 1 tbsp. organic raw honey in a blender or whisk the ingredients together. Place the mixture in an ice cube tray or small cups. This should make about eight servings. Freeze overnight, then remove a serving and add a treat on top for your dog.
As for canines who prefer a bit more of a meaty flavor, try banana bacon ice cream. Mix 1 cup plain (or low-fat) yogurt, one banana, and 1 tbsp. organic raw honey in a blender or whisk together. Place in an ice cube tray or small cups to freeze overnight. Remove and top with a bacon-flavored treat to serve.
Lastly, there’s sweet and savory apple ice cream. Mix 1 cup plain (or lowfat) yogurt, 1 chopped apple (make sure to cut into bite-size pieces and remove all the seeds and the core), and 1 tbsp. organic raw honey in a blender or whisk together. Place in freezer overnight, and serve with a lamb or bacon-flavored treat.
