Punches are flying at Costco, and free cheese samples are to blame!
The big-box store, which, in addition to being one of the only establishments that sells a year’s worth of toilet paper in one package, is known for giving out a variety of free food samples on any given day. And now, those tasty tidbits are being blamed for inciting a physical fight between two older men in Greenville, South Carolina.
The brawl, which occurred on July 26, reportedly began when a 70-year-old man was waiting in line for a complimentary piece of cheese at the local Costco and claimed a 72-year-old man “cut in line, took some cheese and walked off.”
According to a Facebook post shared by the Greenville Police Department on Wednesday, August 1, the younger gentleman was upset about being cut in front of, and told the other man that “he could get in front of him because he knew he would just cut the line anyway.”
The 72-year-old responded by saying “I will do it again,” and then called the younger man a “jerk”, which led to fisticuffs. In fact, USA Today reported the 70-year-old man claimed the older individual struck him on the right side of his skull, knocking off his hat and glasses, though police found no marks on the victim’s head that were consistent with being punched.
Since the men’s stories are inconsistent, law enforcement officials, who opted not to arrest either party, said they are working with Costco to get surveillance footage of the incident in order to determine what actually happened.
