No meat on Monday for these stars! Paul McCartney‘s non-profit, Meat Free Monday, celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Monday, June 17, and since its inception a decade ago, the organization has managed to attract a myriad of celebrity supporters who have vowed to start their weeks off by eating only plant-based meals.
Some of the latest stars to join the fray are Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who declared via Twitter recently that they will no longer consume meat on Mondays. “Doing without meat is good for the planet and the animals we share it with,” Hanks reasoned. Wilson, who is a breast cancer survivor, added that consuming less meat also has various health benefits. “Let’s do it!” the couple said eagerly.
Other stars who opted to no longer eat meat on Mondays include Chris Martin, Reese Witherspoon and Beyoncé. In fact, the “Drunk in Love” singer took the meatless movement to the next level and announced on Instagram in January that she would give fans who embrace a vegan lifestyle the opportunity to win free concert tickets for life. Though the former Destiny’s Child member isn’t strictly vegan, she asserted via her social media post that she goes “plant-based for breakfast” and is also a fan of “meatless Mondays.”
In an effort to drum up even more support, Meat Free Monday launched #MFMCountMeIn on its tenth anniversary. The global campaign strives to “bring celebrities, businesses, not-for-profit groups, educational institutions and individual supporters together, to celebrate what people are doing on the meat free front and inspire even more people to get on board.”
