Purdue University volleyball star Kenna Wollard revealed she was diagnosed with cancer — but provided an optimistic update about her future.
“I’m now ready to share that this past August I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma,” Wollard wrote via Instagram on Thursday, October 28. “Today, I found out that the treatments are working and I am on track to remission!!!!”
The All-American outside hitter, 21, continued, “These past couple months have been so tough but hearing the news today brought so much joy. I still have some treatments left, but I am very hopeful for what’s ahead.”
Wollard said she was “grateful for how well I’ve responded to everything and for the outcome I am expecting.”
“The love and support I’ve received has made this journey 1000000x better,” she added. “I truly am SO loved. These pictures are just a snapshot of how blessed I am. I can’t wait to share another update when I’m done with treatment and back to my normal life. ❤️❤️❤️❤️”
Before the start of her senior season, Wollard revealed she would be taking time away from the team due to “an unexpected health issue.”
“While I’m not ready to share the details at this time, I hope you understand and respect my privacy until I am ready to share more,” she announced via Instagram in August. “But know that I am surrounded by an incredible medical team, family, teammates and people who love me.”
She continued, “Right now my focus is simply on getting healthy and taking this one day at a time. I trust that this is all in Gods hands. Thank you for all the messages, prayers and support. They mean more than you know. I’m so excited to cheer on my girls and be back on the court as soon as possible. Boiler up! ❤️.”
While she hasn’t seen any regular season match action, Wollard has been a constant presence at games throughout the season, often cheering on her team from the sidelines.
“I just love that girl. Any time she’s around, we’re just happy,” Purdue’s Ryan McAleer told the Indy Star in September.
While Wollard’s return to volleyball remains unclear, she felt the full support of the community on her most recent post.
“You are so strong this is such good news!! 🤍,” University of Nebraska volleyball star Bergen Reilly commented.
University of Texas volleyball player Abby Vander Wal wrote, “Praying for you!!! You’re so strong ❤️❤️.”
