This week, Gwen and Us Weekly senior reporter Travis Cronin caught up with celeb hair colorist Michael Canale — the man behind Jennifer Aniston’s perfect California girl blonde — about his two decade-long relationship with the star. From how he first met Jen to how to keep your color looking fresh all summer long, Canale was ready to spill the tea.
Working with blonde bombshells like Jen, Carolyn Murphy, Shakira, Heidi Klum and Kate Hudson and brunette beauties like Penelope Cruz, Canale knows a thing or two about keeping hair #flawless even while experimenting with color. He first met Aniston while she was filming the pilot episode of Friends, and he collaborated with the actress’ hairstylist Chris McMillan to dream up her now-iconic ‘do. At the time, Jen had a curly light brown locks, and Michael came up with “delicate highlighting” technique and “pop front” blonde that completed “The Rachel” cut.
When it comes to keeping hair healthy and color poppin’ all summer long, Michael recommends being sun-smart. To help prevent chlorine damage, he suggests applying oil to the hair and braiding it before hopping in the pool and working with your colorist to develop a special gloss for your hair (as he does for Jennifer) that will prevent fading and oxidation. In fact, Canale is launching new glosses, supplements and anti-aging hair products as part of his salon line later this year, meaning you will soon be on your way to copying Jen’s look.
