Some interesting ink! When it comes to tattoos, celebs aren’t afraid to take a walk on the wild side.

Sure, some stars like Hailey Bieber or Vanessa Hudgens are partial to dainty symbols and barely-there designs, but others go all out. 

They’ll get inked in unsuspecting place (Kesha has a tattoo inside her bottom lip!) or opt for massive designs that take up an entire body part.

Us Weekly has been keeping track of the most insane and out-of-this-world tattoos celebs have gotten through the years, and we’re breaking down the most intricate, crazy and, sometimes confusing designs to date. 

This year alone we saw a fair share of jaw-dropping works. Take Machine Gun Kelly for example. 

While the 31-year-old singer is no stranger to tattoos, he got a bloody looking slash down the center of his neck in April that left Us scratching our heads. 

“Bye bye neck,” he captioned his Instagram post at the time. Fans were obviously a bit perplexed by the gory ink, taking to the comments section.

The “Bloody Valentine” singer’s odd ink may have met its match with Grimes, who shares son X AE A-XII with Elon Musk, however. 

The Canadian singer brought her alien obsession to new heights, getting “beautiful alien scars” on her entire back.

“Full back in white ink by @tweakt with some help form the alien computer brain of @nusi_guero,” she captioned her April 2021 Instagram. “Don’t have a good pic cuz it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it’ll be red for a few weeks.”

While this year saw a decent amount of craziness, stars have a long history of going above and beyond with their body art.

Chris Brown proved just how deep his love for sneakers run, getting a Nike Air Jordan 3 inked on his cheek. Aaron Carter also got on the face tattoo train, debuting a giant Medusa design in September 2019.

We also have to mention Mike Caussin, who had Jana Kramer’s face inked on his upper arm in 2019. At the time, he joked that he would figure out a way to “cover it” if they ever split. Kramer filed for divorce in April 2021.

OMG! The Bridgerton star revealed on a March 2022 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! that she gave herself a cat tattoo on her ankle after watching tutorials from “an inmate making videos in prison.”

She explained that she simply ordered a tattoo pen online. “I didn’t need an ID. I didn’t need anything,” Ashley said. “I just clicked a button.”

New ink alert! The Crown star turned to tattoo artist Oski in January 2022 for an abstract design on their lower stomach.

A Marilyn Monroe moment. The model turned to tattoo artist Tibo G to get the late actress’ face inked above their ankle. “I will always wear Marilyn with pride,” they captioned their January 2022 Instagram post. 

Mistaken identity. Baldwin debuted a tattoo of a whimsical naked female in August 2021 that bared an unintentional resemblance to Kendall Jenner. 

“My tattoo isn’t Kendall Jenner. She’s beautiful tho so I’ll take it … but it’s actually an illustration that was done in the 60’s,” the Chikin Boi founder wrote via Instagram Stories. “Also, I love my tattoos and I’m going to keep getting them because it’s my body, life’s short and it’s none of your business.”

The Red Table Talk cohost turned to tattoo artist Anka Lavriv for a new design in July 2021. “THANK YOU for adorning me with this beautiful representation of Saraswati (सरस्वती), the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning👁🎨🎼📚,” Smith captioned her Instagram post. “Your energy is DIVINE and my gratitude for you is infinite! Can’t wait to get more gorgeous tats by you in the future❤️‍🔥.​​​”

The “I’ve Got the Boy” singer showed off her delicate new ink in July 2021. The script is meant to remind her that she’s everything she needs to be.

“What I need most to remember is that I am enough,” the One Tree Hill alum wrote via Instagram. “I am good enough. It’s my constant daily struggle so just like what I needed believe to do for me I now need that reminder everyday that I’m enough,” she wrote. “ALSO a reminder that I’m strong enough to walk through it all!!”

Out of this world! On February 11, 2020, tattoo artist Joaquin "Ganga" Lopez posted a snap of the "Loyal" singer's fresh ink, which featured a black-and-white design of Nike's Air Jordan 3 Sneaker inked on the right side of the rapper's face. "More tattoos last night for my brother @chrisbrownofficial," he wrote in the accompanying caption. "Here is this Jordan shoe that I did recently."

The model, who is the son of Cindy Crawford and brother of Kaia Gerber, debuted brand new face ink that reads “misunderstood” in a post on Instagram. “Thanks homie,” he wrote alongside the video clip, crediting celebrity tattoo artist JonBoy for the design.

The singer showed his adoration for Elvis Presley by getting the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s face tattooed on his arm. He captioned the pic, "King. The reason I’m here."

Adding on to his already outrageous Medusa face tattoo, the "I'm All About You" singer posted a video to his Instagram feed on October 5, 2019, sharing the new ink he added to his neck. Instead of falling just underneath the gigantic original tat, he added to the other side of his neck as well for a full wrap-around effect. Fresh from the tattoo parlor with the plastic wrap still overtop, Carter didn't reveal the design. 

On September 28, 2019, the singer revealed a large face tattoo of Medusa while taking a ride on his ATV. The intricate and giant design created by Herchell L Carrasco and inspired by Rihanna's ink apparently cost Carter $5,000. 

On September 27, 2019, the Teen Mom OG star posted a photo to Instagram showing off her new ink by tattoo artist Tiffany Perez. The large design lives on her rib cage and is dedicated to her 2-year-old daughter, Ryder. She captioned the pic,"My FAVORITE tattoo ever! I was freaking out, but Ryder’s hand/non profit logo is beyond perfect and has soo much meaning."

The musician has a massive tattoo on his neck with the text "vegan for life" written in all caps. The animal rights activist is clearly devoted to the meat-free lifestyle and now he's proudly showcasing it for the world to see — even from far, far away. 

After teasing her new forearm tattoo on the 'gram, the model finally showed it off at the UOMA Beauty Summer House L.A. in August 2019. The fresh ink says, "What’s meant for me will never miss me," written in small cursive. Fans speculated that the new tat might have something to do with her former friendship with Kylie Jenner, especially since Woods posted about it on the weekend of her ex-best friend's 22nd birthday. 

The singer showed off her new tattoo on the 'gram on July 29, 2019. The new ink lives on her kneecap (ouch!) and it's of two overlapping bandaids with the words "poor thing" written in the middle of one. Halsey credited the tattoo to London-based artist Emily Malice.

Offset posted a picture to Instagram on July 21, 2019, revealing his wife's newest tattoo. The two were video chatting when one of them screenshotted the moment in which Cardi B lifted up her leg to show "Offset" tattooed in cursive on the back of her thigh, right above her knee. He captioned the photo, "CAN'T WAIT TO GET HOME."

The country singer was spotted sporting a giant tattoo on her inner forearm as she walked hand in hand with her hubby, Brendan McLoughlin, in NYC. Fans speculated that the two M's on either side of the heart stand for her new married initials — Miranda McLoughlin. 

The Teen Mom OG star showed off his new arm tattoo in honor of his daughter, Vaeda, on April 24, 2019. "What a blessing it is to be her father & what a privilege it is to always be her protector," he wrote in the accompanying caption. 

The Girls' star posted a picture to Instagram on April 2, 2019, showing off her new "sick" neck tattoo courtesy of Haven Studio in Brooklyn. "Sometimes the thing you’re most scared of being called," she wrote in the accompanying caption, "is the best thing you can call yourself."

Adding to the extensive collection of ink, the SNL star’s tattoo artist Ryan Mullins shared a pic on Instagram on March 6, 2019, of the massive unicorn design that now occupies the majority of the funny man’s left arm.  

Only days after news broke that he and fiancée Maggie Q split, the actor took to Instagram on March 3, 2019, to show off his new "half sleeve" by Hollywood tattoo artist Mark Mahoney. 

The “Breathin” singer attempted to get the title of her hit track, “7 Rings,” tattooed on her hand in Japanese, but she missed a few characters. “Ariana Grande’s new tattoo “七輪” means Japanese style bbq grill, not 7 rings,” a Twitter user pointed out. “If you want to know about 七輪, just google ’SHICHIRIN.” The songstress later tried to update her ink, but she botched it once more when adding a Japanese symbol in the wrong spot, changing the artwork’s translation to, “Japanese BBQ finger.”

While we confimed that the singer got a face tattoo back in November, we only just learned what word he chose! Celeb tattoo artist JonBoy rang in the New Year by sharing the first up-close look at the design on his Instagram feed on December 31, 2018. The “Baby” singer had the word “grace” daintily tattooed in a script font above his left eyebrow during a session in which his wife Hailey Bieber also got inked (though not on her famous face!) by JonBoy.

The "In My Feelings" rapper revealed a giant chest piece to his collection of tattoos in December 2018. The tat is of a massive owl, which is the symbol for his company October's Very Own and record label OVO Sound, catching a mouse. The body art is already quite elaborate, but it's still not finished. "It’s 12 hours [of] work so far," a representative for the Degrassi alum's tattoo artist Inal Bersekov told Refinery29. "[There's] still [a] few hours to go."

The “God is a Woman” singer posted a pic to her Instagram story on October 30 where the tattoo she got with ex-fiancé, Pete Davidson of the word “Reborn” is visibly covered up by a freshly inked feather. 

Cindy Crawford’s 17-year-old daughter, Kaia, revealed some new ink this week. The young model showed off her first tattoo which is of her middle name “Jordan,” written in script on her bicep. Her second tat? A small space ship on her thigh.

The former One Direction singer revealed in October 2018 a massive new head tattoo. He showed off the new flower ink to his Instagram followers. 

The singer added a butterfly tattoo to her forearm courtesy of tattoo artist Jon Boy's artistry, adding to her collection. This tattoo has meaning, though, because it matches her mother Tish's similar ink. Cyrus showed off her new body art in an Instagram post on Sunday, September 30. 

The son of Victoria and David Beckham added to his tattoo collection with an angels-in-the-clouds scene on his chest he unveiled on September 11. Tagging artist “Doctor” Brian Woo, he wrote in the caption, “Bloody love it mate xxx.”

Malik debuted his new head tattoo in March 2018, one week after splitting from ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid. Hadid complimented the ink nearly one month later, days before the former flames were caught locking lips in New York City.

Brotherly love! The Wolf of Wall Street actor honored his younger sister, Beanie Feldstein, with a tattoo on his arm reading, “Hello Beanie.”

Hill debuted his new ink via Instagram in March 2018 and Feldstein reposted the photo on her own account shortly after. “Somebody wants to put on his Sunday clothes!!! @jonahhill — this is NEXT LEVEL,” she gushed. “Love you!”

The Gone Girl actor showed off his massive tattoo of a colorful phoenix while he was working out on a beach in Hawaii in March 2018. He was first spotted with the ink when he was working on the set of Live by Night in December 2015, but claimed that it was “fake for a movie" at the time.

"It was actually per my father's request," Gaga has said of putting all of her tattoos — including this rose design — on the left side of her body. "He asked that I remain, on one side, slightly normal."

The actress decided to get inked with a butterfly design at the urging of her friend Ruby Rose. "Please don't blame me, but I may have convinced Vanessa Hudgens to get a tattoo," Rose tweeted. "Her first."

The "Diamonds" singer got a traditional Maori tattoo while in New Zealand in October 2013. Local musician Tiki Taane and tattooist Inia Taylor shared a video of Rihanna getting inked using a chisel and mallet on her hand.

Michele may have played good girl Rachel Berry on the Fox hit Glee, but the star has an edgy exterior. Michele has nine tattoos, including the word "Imagine," which she and costars Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale got inked on their left feet.

As part of her interview with Rolling Stone magazine in September 2013, the "We Can't Stop" singer got "ROLLING $TONE" tattooed on the bottom of her feet.

The Blink-182 drummer is nearly covered with tattoos, including the phrase "Can I Say" on his collar bone.

The former Jackass stuntman and one-time Dancing With the Stars contestant has his own likeness tattooed on his back.

Suvari attended the Belvedere IX launch party at L.A.'s MyHouse with the number 13 tattooed on her chest.

"Nothing Compares 2 . . . ?" During an appearance on Ireland's The Late Late Show in October 2013, the Irish singer showed off tattoos of the letter "B" and "Q" on her cheeks. The bold ink was speculated to be a nod to her past love Brendan Quinian.

To commemorate the end of his AMC smash Breaking Bad, the actor got a tiny tat featuring the show's logo of chemical element symbols Br and Ba in square boxes on his right ring finger. "When I catch a glimpse, it reminds me of this experience and I smile," Cranston told Us Weekly in September 2013.

In September 2012, the singer denied his large neck tattoo portrayed his ex-girlfriend Rihanna and/or a battered woman. Instead, Brown claimed his tattoo was of a sugar skull, an image associated with the Mexican Day of the Dead. "I'm an artist and this is art. Dia de los Muertos," he tweeted, referring to the celebration.

The "Blow" singer got the words "suck it" tattooed on the inside of her bottom lip in June 2012.

"Got my head tatted today!" Miley Cyrus' older brother captioned a photo of a Native American chief inked on his shaved head on Instagram in May 2012. "Excuse all the ink on my face. And yes this hurt!!!"

The Transformers actress decided to remove a tattoo of Marilyn Monroe on her arm in August 2011. "I'm removing it," Fox told Amica magazine at the time. "She was a negative person, she was disturbed, bipolar. I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life."
