Angelina Jolie isn't alone. Christina Applegate, Giuliana Rancic, and Sharon Osbourne -- among others -- have also undergone surgery to treat or reduce their risk of breast cancer
Upon being diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2008 at age 36, the Married With Children alum at first opted to have a lumpectomy. She later learned, however, that she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation. Armed with that information, she chose to have both breasts removed in a bilateral mastectomy, followed by reconstructive surgery a few months later. "It can be very painful," she told Oprah Winfrey in 2008. "It's also a part of you that's gone, so you go through a grieving process."
