Bye, bye BlackBerry! The company announced on Wednesday, September 28, that it will no longer be making its own phones.
Per CNN, the smartphone maker will now rely on other manufacturers to make the devices and will continue to focus its attention on software.
Savvy tech users were first able to get their hands on BlackBerrys in 1999. The keyboard was a favorite, and it was the first phone to integrate email. However, sales have plummeted in recent years thanks to its main competitor, Apple. In April, Fortune reported that Apple sold more phones per day than BlackBerry did in one quarter.
"Remember back in those days people were debating which one is better, ie: Apple vs BlackBerry?" one critic tweeted following the news on Wednesday.
BlackBerry will be sorely missed by many. Some stars who've used BlackBerrys include President Barack Obama, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Lindsay Lohan, Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Back in May, the Sex and the City star, 51, shared a photo of three BlackBerrys via Instagram. "Now this isn't something you see often. It's like the blackberries are mating en route to Boston via @amtrak," she captioned the pic. "It's nice to see them having some fun for a change."
Last month, Kim Kardashian — who has been a fan for years — posted about her beloved BlackBerry breaking down. "Sooo my blackberry bold died. I can’t find anymore on eBay. I knew this day would come & to be honest I’m prepared. But the question is … Do I try a different kind of blackberry? Or ditch it all together? Or a different phone like Samsung?" the Selfish author, 35, tweeted on August 4. "I need 2 phones. Because I love having 2 different phone services so I always have a working phone."
Chrissy Teigen sent her condolence flowers for the phone. "You guys, how thoughtful is Chrissy?" Kardashian said during a Snapchat video. "She sent me this floral arrangement, she just gets me."
