Was there ChapStick in the green room? Helen Mirren left Stephen Colbert speechless during The Late Show on Tuesday, March 8, when, instead of shaking the host’s hand while greeting him, she leaned in for a tender kiss.
“If I didn’t do it then, I’d never get to do it,” Mirren, 70, explained to the cheering crowd. “So, you know. I have been dreaming about doing that for 15 years. So I just grabbed my chance, I’m sorry.”
Colbert, 51, was beside himself — but he didn’t seem to mind the kiss! He took his seat and dabbed his face with a handkerchief.
“I suddenly can’t remember any questions,” he joked. “That’s one of the nicest greetings any guest has ever given me. You know what you’re doing. Thank you so much for being here. Can you imagine the number of people who are jealous of me right now?”
The Trumbo actress laughed, but appeared disappointed with her smooch. “Including me!” she replied. “When I watch it I’ll be going, ‘Oh, why didn’t I do more?'”
Colbert quipped, “I’ll tell you what, the night is young.”
