Born in the Netherlands, Arie Luyendyk Jr. moved to the United States at age 3 with his parents, Mieke and Arie Luyendyk Sr., and siblings. The family settled in Wisconsin, and at a young age, Luyendyk Jr. began to take an interest in auto racing.
Before making his Bachelor Nation debut in 2012, he competed in a variety of racing series, including the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Daytona. He also participated in the Indy Lights Series and was a test driver in the A1 Grand Prix for the A1 Team The Netherlands.
Luyendyk Jr. vied for Emily Maynard‘s heart on season 8 of The Bachelorette and ended as runner-up to winner Jef Holm. Five years after his first appearance in the ABC franchise, he was named the season 22 Bachelor lead in 2017.
Initially, the real estate broker gave his final rose to Becca Kufrin, but he regretted not pursuing an engagement with runner-up Lauren Burnham. Kufrin eventually was named season 14 Bachelorette and Luyendyk Jr. proposed to Burnham during the live After the Final Rose special in March 2018.
