Martha Stewart thinks her prison drama was better than Netflix’s scripted scenarios. The lifestyle mogul, who served time in prison in 2004, said on a new episode of the talk show Chelsea that she doesn’t watch the popular prison series Orange Is the New Black.
Host Chelsea Handler asked if it “hits too close to home,” and the former inmate quipped, “It’s not as good as the real thing.”
Stewart spent five months behind bars for fraud charges and was sentenced to five months of house arrest following her release in March 2005. “When you live through something like Orange Is the New Black, the real characters are better,” she told Handler.
The businesswoman went on to complain about the TV choices of her fellow convicts, explaining that the viewing-room situation wasn’t exactly relaxing. “In prison, it was BET television at all times. I had to get up really early to watch the news,” she recalled. “There’s only one TV available and you have to sit in hard chairs and look up like this [cranes her neck] at the TV. So if I wanted to watch the stock market and stuff like that, I had to get up really early and watch it by myself.”
Now that she’s free to watch what she wants, when she wants, Stewart is particular about which shows she binges — and which she stays away from. She revealed that she loves House of Cards and The Blacklist, but she’s never seen Game of Thrones. “I’ve never watched The Borgias either because I can’t stand torture,” she said. “I’ve never watched that horrible, horrible [show] about the crystal-meth guys,” she said of Breaking Bad. “Never watched it. I can’t. They’re such ugly people.”
