Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama’s relationship status has changed multiple times over the years, but where do the duo stand now? New shady lyrics point to a falling out between the exes. The Disney star, who is 12 years younger than the actor, was first linked to Valderrama when she was 18 years old. “When I first met Wilmer he was 29. I met him on January 11 of 2010, and it was at a PSA shoot at his house for the 2010 census forms. To be honest, I only did it because I heard it was at his house and I thought he was really cute,” Lovato said in her 2017 documentary, Simply Complicated. “I didn't really care about the census forms. But [when] I met him and I laid eyes on him for the first time, I was in hair and makeup and he came in and sat down and I was like 'I love this man' and 'I have to have him.' But I was only 17, so he was like, 'Get away from me.' After I turned 18, we began dating. I think it was love at first sight, and I don't really believe in that, but I believe that it happened.” The twosome dated on and off for six years before pulling the plug on their relationship in 2016. "After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship. This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends," they said via a joint statement at the time. [jwplayer l7B2gCzW-zhNYySv2] The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer further opened up about the split in Simply Complicated, explaining that she needed to “conquer” not relying on someone else. “I just wasn't ready and there was so much in my life that I hadn't explored yet,” Lovato said. “That was one of the reasons why we broke up because I've never been alone. It had nothing to do with falling out of love, we decided together we just probably are better as friends." She continued: “I think my heart is always with Wilmer. You don't share six years with somebody and not give them a piece of your heart and vice versa. I'm pretty sure I am not going to meet anybody that compares to him, but I'm trying to keep an open heart and an open mind when it comes to that." While the former couple initially stayed close, with Valderrama publicly supporting Lovato after her 2018 overdose, she appeared to slam their relationship in 2022, seemingly addressing her age difference with Valderrama in her track “29,” a song off her eighth studio album, Holy Fvck. “Finally 29 / Funny, just like you were you at the time,” the lyrics read. “Thought it was a teenage dream / just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine?” Scroll through for more:

Meet Cute

Lovato and Valderrama met while filming a PSA to encourage Latino Millennials to vote at the That ‘70s Show alum’s home in 2010. The former Disney star called the moment “love at first sight” during her 2017 YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated. “When I met him and I laid eyes on him for the first time, I was in hair and makeup and I was like, ‘I love his man and I have to have him.’ But I was only 17 so he was like, ‘Get away from me.’ After I turned 18, we began dating.”

On and Off

The twosome hit their first rough patch after Lovato entered rehab in November 2010 for her struggles with an eating disorder, cutting and substance abuse. Their relationship cooled off while she sought treatment, but they were back on a year later in 2011. A source told Us at the time that Lovato and Valderrama split for a brief period in 2012, but were back on by Valentine’s Day. “They stared into each other’s eyes the whole time,” a source told Us of their sushi date in February 2013.

Public Affair 

Lovato confirmed their relationship by sharing a sweet selfie of the pair on Instagram in November 2014. “I never post personal pictures like this but f—k.. He is perfect,” she wrote at the time. “I miss my @wilmervalderrama 💜.”

I Own It All to You 

The “Skyscraper” crooner gushed about Valderrama as she celebrated three years of sobriety in March 2015. “I wish I could put into words how grateful I am for this man right here. But my love has grown to a level that words could never possibly express how much this man completes me,” Lovato captioned a photo of herself and the actor on Instagram at the time. “He's loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober... After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery... he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn't be alive today without him. I love you Wilmer ❤️.”

Anniversary Bliss 

Lovato commemorated the anniversary of meeting Valderrama on Instagram in January 2016. “6   ❤️,” she simply captioned an adorable pic of the duo laying in bed.

Calling it Quits 

The pair revealed in a joint statement shared on social media in June 2016 that they were going their separate ways. “After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship. This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as friends,” the statement read. “We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.”

Holding Out Hope 

After their split, Lovato and Valderrama reunited for a cute photo opp in June 2017. “Best of friends no matter what,” she captioned a pic of the twosome on her Instagram Story at the time. The “Tell Me You Love Me” singer also opened up about their relationship in her YouTube documentary later that year. “I’ve never loved anybody like I’ve loved Wilmer,” she revealed during Simply Complicated. “And like I still love Wilmer.”

Still There for Her

After Lovato was rushed to the hospital in July 2018 following an apparent overdose, a source told Us Weekly that Valderrama was “completely devastated.” According to the source, the actor “still loves Demi and it was just a matter of scheduling and time that they needed to make a romantic relationship work.”  

The day after the singer’s overdose, Valderrama was spotted visiting her at the hospital in Los Angeles. “He seemed really down and looked sad,” an insider told Us at the time. “He stayed for around three hours.”

Officially Dunzo With Demi

Valderrama proposed to model girlfriend Amanda Pacheco in January 2020 after eight months of dating. They welcomed a daughter in February 2021.

Lost Touch

While the twosome were always open about their desire to stay friends, Lovato confirmed in April 2020 that she is no longer in touch with Valderrama. “I’m really happy for him and I wish him nothing but the best,” Lovato told Harper’s Baazar at the time. “But we’re not in each other’s lives [anymore].”

That same month, Lovato opened up about why she can no longer be friends with her exes. “I had to realize that that wasn’t healthy either. Trying to maintain close friendships with some of my exes just isn’t realistic,” she said on Jameela Jamil’s “I Weigh” podcast. “I was afraid of fully letting go of people. And now that I’ve been able to fully let go out of people, that was another thing that I’ve had to learn when it comes to coming toxic people out of your life. If they’re an ex, it’s for a reason.”

Lovato’s “29” lyrics turned heads as Valderrama was 29 when they started their on-again, off-again relationship.
