Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin remained friends after their divorce, and even his girlfriend, Dakota Johnson, has been welcomed into the family. Paltrow and Martin tied the knot in December 2003, later welcoming daughter Apple and son Moses in May 2004 and April 2006, respectively. When the pair announced their split in March 2014, they noted that they still loved each other “very much.” Paltrow subsequently filed for divorce in April 2015, and the proceedings were finalized in July 2016. She moved on with Brad Falchuk, while Martin sparked a romance with Johnson. “Gwyneth loves Dakota and vice versa. Gwyneth Approved of Dakota From the Get-Go

Shortly after news broke of Martin and Johnson’s romance, an insider told Us that Paltrow did not “really know” the Social Network star but they had “some mutual friends.” Despite their unfamiliarity at the time, the Shakespeare in Love actress was “happy if Chris is happy. She only wants the best for him.”  

The source added: “[Gwyneth] trusts his judgment and knows he’s smart about his decisions and who he spends time with. She leaves it at that. She doesn’t scrutinize his choices or who he dates.”

Gwyneth Encouraged Chris and Dakota to Get Back Together

In 2019, Johnson and Martin reconciled following a brief split. An insider told Us that August that Paltrow was “the one who pushed them” to give their romance another shot.

They’ve Been Spotted on Double Dates

Paltrow, Falchuk, Martin and Johnson were seen hanging out at the beach in the Hamptons in August 2019.  

“The adults are all very friendly,” a source shared that October. “It’s not without effort and having to put feelings aside from time to time. They genuinely enjoy being together and there’s a lot of love for one another on all sides.”

Gwyneth Has Declared Her Love for Dakota

The Goop founder detailed her relationship with Johnson in January 2020. “I love her,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her. I always start to think of the ampersand sign — what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that.”  

A fan later asked Paltrow during a January 2022 Instagram Story Q&A, “Do you love Dakota Johnson?” to which she replied, “Very much.”

Choosing Kindness

Johnson reflected on how her own upbringing as a child of divorce (parents Don Johnson and Melanie Griffiths divorced in 1996) with six half-siblings likely made her more eager to have a positive relationship with Paltrow.

“Maybe I think about relationships like that differently because I grew up in my family. We were all cool [with each other],” Johnson told Vanity Fair in June 2022. “Obviously, there were times where it was not cool, but I experienced that, so I don’t want that in my life. I don’t want any kids to experience anything like that. It’s better to be kind, and it’s also really nice that everybody actually really loves each other and has each other’s backs.”

A 'Very Good' Friendship

Paltrow detailed her connection with Johnson during an Instagram Story Q&A in October 2023. "We're actually very good friends. I love her so much," she gushed, calling Johnson "an adorable, wonderful person."

She previously told fans in January 2022 that she loves Johnson "very much," sharing advice via her Instagram Story about moving on after a divorce. "It's a great opportunity to get ruthless with the truth of who you are, what you want and what you deserve," she said.
