Inside Kirstie Alley and John Travolta’s Relationship: Everything the ‘Look Who’s Talking’ Costars Have Said About Each Other

A friendship for the ages. Kirstie Alley and John Travolta may have met on the set of their romantic comedy Look Who’s Talking — but the pair were so much more than costars. 

“I almost ran off and married John,” Alley said during an August 2018 episode of Celebrity Big Brother U.K., revealing that her relationship with the Pulp Fiction star was more than just an on-screen romance. “I did love him. I still love him. If I hadn’t [have] been married, I would have gone and married him.”

The twosome met while filming the 1989 beloved film and returned for its subsequent sequel, Look Who’s Talking Too, one year later. The Drop Dead Gorgeous star shared that it wasn’t hard to fall in love with Travolta considering how many months they spent together. 

“When you get on the road and you’re doing a movie, it’s very easy to fall in love with your leading man,” she gushed. “For a year, you’re around this person. … It’s just hard, I think.”

While Alley tied the knot with ex-husband Parker Stevenson in 1983 — with whom she shared son William and daughter Ellie — she confessed that she would have married Travolta if she hadn’t already been taken. (The New Jersey native, for his part, went on to wed Kelly Preston in 1991 and the couple welcomed three children, daughter Ella, and sons Benjamin and Jett, before her death in July 2020.)

“It would have been in an airplane,” she explained of her would-have-been wedding with Travolta while appearing on the U.K. reality series. “Because he has his own. And let me tell you girls, it doesn’t seem like it’s important that someone has a private jet, but it is. As you get older, you do not want to hang out in airports.” 

Less than a year later, the Saturday Night Fever star echoed Alley’s sentiment on their close relationship. During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, he called the Cheers alum his “soulmate” and “best girlfriend.” 

When asked if he would be interested in returning for a Look Who’s Talking reboot, the Face/Off actor replied, “I would do anything with Kirstie. So let’s see what happens.”

Although the two never actually sparked a real-life romance, they remained close friends over the years, with the Oscar winner even guest starring on the Fat Actress alum's 2013 sitcom, Kirstie. 

When Alley died in December 2022 following a short battle with cancer, Travolta was one of the first celebrities to react to her passing. 

“Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had,” the Grease star wrote via Instagram at the time. “I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.” The actor also posted a clip of the pair’s iconic dance sequence their film to his Instagram Stories.

2004

“I’ve feel like John is my soulmate. I said to John, ‘Am I your best friend?’ and he plays this stupid game with me. He goes, ‘Maybe,” Alley revealed during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

“I love him. I just adore him," she said, adding that while there was a time the two “should” have tied the knot, they ultimately “would have killed each other.” 

The Hot in Cleveland actress went on to share that she instead made a suggestion to Travolta's wife: They “all move into the same house” together. 

“I don’t care if I have sex with John,” she told host Oprah Winfrey. “I just want to be around him. Why don’t we just buy a big commune, a big thing, and we all live there. He’s like having a pony.”

2013

During an appearance on Good Morning America to promote Alley's sitcom, Kirstie, the pair reunited and discussed how their feelings for each other have changed over the years. 

“He sort of is the love of my life,” the Golbergs alum explained. “It’s evolved. There was a time where I thought, ‘I’d like to marry him.’ The problem was, I was married. There was this one little glitch.” 

Travolta, for his part, agreed that he also “fell in love” with Alley at “a particular time,” but they eventually settled on staying platonic pals. 

“Now his wife is my best girlfriend,” Alley said at the time while Travolta said the Emmy winner was "the person I could have fun with and play with."

“She’s a playmate," he added. 

When asked about the secret to their "chemistry," they replied, “We like each other.”

December 2018

The Kansas native gushed about her love for Travolta, revealing that the twosome almost “ran off” together while filming their 1989 comedy.

The Get Shorty star referred to Alley as his “soulmate” and “best girlfriend” during an exclusive interview with Us, noting that he would be up for a Look Who’s Talking reboot if the Dancing With the Stars alum signed on with him.

2020

The King of Queens actress said that she and Travolta would be willing to return for another installment of the Look Who’s Talking franchise – as long as their characters remained the focus. 

"John and I, we both really want to do it, because we think it's funny that we're the grandparents," Alley said during an appearance on The Talk, joking that their kids would have to be “ugly” so that the duo could remain the stars. "We heard a rumor they were doing it, but I don't know if it's with us or without us.”

Following Alley’s death, Travolta honored his close confidant with a touching tribute. 

“Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had,” the Grease star wrote via Instagram alongside a sweet throwback photo of the pair. “I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.”
