41 Must-Watch TV Shows on BritBox Right Now (July 2026): ‘Gone’ and More

Michael Polly (David Morrissey) is worried. His wife, Alana (Emma Appleton), has disappeared, and no one knows where she is. Her car keys and mobile phone are still at home, so it’s likely she didn’t leave on her own. Who could’ve taken her, and why? That’s what Detective Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles) has to find out when she’s assigned to Alana’s case, which becomes more complicated as her investigation deepens. Annie doesn’t quite buy Michael’s story and suspects he may be involved in his wife’s disappearance.

Is Annie right? I’m not telling! But I will reveal Gone is an addictive murder mystery that’s better than the recent Harlan Coben Netflix adaptation, Until I Find You. Morrissey is one of England’s most underrated actors, and he gives Michael an intriguing ambiguity that makes him a sympathetic protagonist — and possible killer. Gone‘s first three episodes premiere on July 23, with the remaining three released weekly. 

Detective Mackenzie Clarke (Anna Samson) is used to the fast and chaotic life of London, but all that comes to a crashing halt when she’s framed for tampering with evidence at a crime scene. She reluctantly returns home to Dolphin Cove, a coastal Australian town that’s the complete opposite of her former city. There are still crimes to solve, though, and even though her reputation is in the gutter, she’s still a sharp inspector who can apprehend suspects like no one else.

After a successful debut, Return to Paradise returns for a follow-up season filled with more mysteries and personal drama for Mackenzie. Her ex-fiancée, Glenn (Tai Hara), is getting married to another woman, and she’s doing her best to avoid him and the upcoming ceremony by burying herself in work. The series is more light-hearted than thrilling, blending romance, crime and observational comedy in a nice, entertaining package.

The woman of substance in the title is Emma Harte, the fictional heroine of BritBox’s new drama series that takes place throughout the 20th century. When we first meet young Emma (Jessica Reynolds), she’s a lowly maid scrubbing dirty floors in Yorkshire. What she lacks in money she makes up for in ambition, which takes her out of the slums and into high society. But to paraphrase the late, great Biggie Smalls, more money brings more problems, and even an older and wiser Emma (Brenda Blethyn) can’t avoid unnecessary drama.

Based on the 1979 Barbara Taylor Bradford novel of the same name, A Woman of Substance is an entertaining throwback to all those female-led miniseries that starred TV icons like Valerie Bertinelli and Joan Collins. This adaptation is classier than the miniseries that inspired it, but it’s essentially the same melodramatic pulp that’s worked for years. Oscar nominee Blethyn is terrific as the mature Emma, who is determined to make it to the top even though she’s already there.

A Woman of Substance will start streaming on June 24.

It’s safe to assume that if you’re a BritBox subscriber, you’re a Jane Austen fan — or at least know about the 18th-century author who wrote Pride and Prejudice. If this is true, then run, don’t walk, to your TV and stream The Other Bennet Sister, a sort-of sequel to P and P that takes a look at — you guessed it — the other Bennet sister, Mary (Down Cemetery Road‘s Ella Bruccoleri). 

Mary is not as conventionally beautiful or lovelorn as little sis Elizabeth, but beneath her meek exterior lies the beating heart of a woman who wants to live life her own way. That repressed fire attracts the attention of Mr. Hayward (Dónal Finn) and Mr. Ryder (Laurie Davidson), but is married life really what Mary wants? 

Like most of Austen’s novels, The Other Bennet Sister has a great mix of light romantic comedy mixed with some pretty sharp social satire. Bruccoleri fleshes out Mary and does the impossible by making her a more interesting character than Elizabeth Bennet. Take that, Keira Knightley!

Who doesn’t want to see a couple of bitches trade barbs and gossip behind other people’s backs? That may sound harsh, but that’s a compliment after you’ve watched all 14 episodes of Vicious, a biting comedy series that ran for two seasons and two specials on the BBC.

Theatre legends Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi star as Freddie and Stuart, a couple who have been together for nearly 50 years. They love each other, but sometimes they get on each other’s nerves. When twentysomething Ash (Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon) moves into the apartment upstairs, he awakens a fatherly affection in the bickering couple. That doesn’t stop them from insulting him or others, though; old habits are hard to break, especially ones that bring Freddie and Stuart such joy.

Think of Vicious as an updated version of Absolutely Fabulous, only with two male queens instead of two female ones. Freddie and Stuart are essentially Edina and Patsy in male drag, and their observations about life, love and aging are just as scathing as that famous duo’s. McKellen and Jacobi have a ball being nasty to each other, and Harry Potter’s Frances de la Tour provides some additional laughs as the couple’s longtime friend, Violet. 

Craving a good cop crime show? BritBox has just the show for you. Blue Lights is an absorbing police procedural that is set in Northern Ireland. The first season follows three novice police officers as they are trained by their mentors and experience their first work assignments. The second season is set a year later and shows how much they’ve grown and what they still need to learn about police work.

Blue Lights is a bit like the “Law” part of Law & Order, as it focuses mostly on police work rather than getting too specific about each officer’s personal lives. The show takes a “slice of life” approach that gives it a captivating, gritty realism. 

Blue Lights season 3 is set to premiere on June 18.

Outside of America, the world’s most popular sport is soccer — sorry, football. And the biggest football tournament is about to occur this summer, when the World Cup takes place over five weeks in 16 cities. The new mockumentary Twenty Twenty Six satirizes the event by offering a weary look at the overtaxed and underpaid workers who struggle to make it happen.

Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville stars as Ian Fletcher, who is tasked with making sure the World Cup goes off without a hitch. That’s easier said than done, as Ian has to oversee a young social media team he barely understands, climate change protestors who think the World Cup will accelerate the end of the world and clashing celebrity egos. A semi-sequel to past comedy hits like Twenty Twelve and W1A, Twenty Twenty Six is like Ted Lasso if you stripped away all the optimism and goopd vives. In other words, it’s nothing like Ted Lasso, and I can’t think of a higher recommendation than that.

The Lady is a partly fictionalized true account of the rise and fall of Jane Andrews (Mia McKenna-Bruce). Andrews broke from her working-class background to become the royal hairdresser for Sarah, Duchess of York (Natalie Dormer) during the late ’80s and early ’90s, before her shocking conviction for the murder of her lover, Thomas Cressman (Ed Speleers), in 2001.

Fans are currently loving The Lady in part for Bruce’s exceptional performance as Andrews, bringing depth and complexity to a challenging role that blends vulnerability with a calculating edge. The show is a must-watch for anyone who loves true crime, as it does a great job of depicting a royal scandal interwoven with shocking murder. The production values and excellent costume design allow viewers to become fully immersed in the time period as well, and the fast-paced storyline is constantly engaging.

Steven Toast (Matt Berry) has been working as an actor in London for years, yet he still struggles to book a gig. When he’s not performing in a play that’s universally reviled, he’s sparring with his eccentric agent Jane Plough (Doon Mackichan) to get him roles; getting roped into schemes with his bathrobe-clad roommate Ed (Robert Bathurst); doing voiceover work for two hipsters named Clem Fandango (Shazad Letif) and Danny Bear (Tim Downie); or dueling with Ray Purchase (Harry Peacock), Toast’s arch nemesis and fellow actor, whose wife Toast is sleeping with.

Before Berry broke into the American market by playing a vampire on What We Do in the Shadows, he was the dishonorable Steven Toast on one of the funniest sitcoms British TV has to offer. Each episode of Toast of London blends surreal, slapstick, absurdity and so much more, all packed into short, 20-minute episodes. A lot of Toast of London is just funny by virtue of Matt Berry’s voice, but the comedy is gag-a-minute. Also, the name “Clem Fandango” will get lodged into your brain permanently.

Brighton-based Detective Roy Grace (John Simm) has hit rock bottom, still reeling from the disappearance of his wife Sandy (Clare Calbraith) from six years prior. And while he’s still active on the job investigating cold cases, he plunges too hard and too fast into his work to numb the pain of his grief. Though his job is at risk when his bosses scrutinize his methods of working, fortune comes his way when his colleague Detective Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell) calls in Grace’s assistance on a particularly tough case.

While a tad formulaic at times, Grace finds its voice through its particularly gruesome cases and clever, unique plotting. The series boasts great production values that draw the audience into the story, and the lead performances from Campbell and Simm are superb. Overall, Grace is one to watch if you love enthralling crime thrillers.

Ten Pound Poms follows a group of Britons who emigrate to Australia in 1956, following a migration plan which promises a better life and employment for the low, low price of just ten pounds. Still recovering from the trauma of World War II, Annie (Faye Marsay), Terry (Warren Brown) and their two kids (Finn Treacy and Hattie Hook) flee their home country for the promise of a better life in the Outback. At the same time, a young nurse named Kate (Michelle Keegan) travels on her own and leaves her fiancé behind for vague reasons. Ultimately, the group discovers that their new lives in Australia aren’t as easy as they were led to believe.

Though historical accuracy leaves a lot to be desired in Ten Pound Poms, the series is still a delightful and juicy drama that gets better with each episode. The show weaves many different plotlines into a wholly engaging narrative, and the performances are rich across the board. Don’t go into Ten Pound Poms expecting a documentary, but a highly entertaining character drama about disparate people struggling to make a new life for themselves.

When five women come together to form a punk rock band in order to enter into a local talent competition, they realize that they all have a lot more anger to express in their music than they ever knew. Kitty (Rosalie Craig), Beth (Joanna Scanlan), Holly (Tamsin Greig), Yvonne (Amelia Bullmore) and Jess (Lorraine Ashbourne) find their lives changed for the better as they begin to seriously devote time to their new project. Juggling demanding jobs, grown children and aging parents, the women find solace in their music and in each other, in this delightful drama from Happy Valley’s Sally Wainwright.

Riot Women is a funny, sweet and honest portrayal of middle-aged women who use their raucus music to break from the invisibility they’ve felt in getting older. In addition to being great representation for older women and the challenges (and joys) of aging, the series also features some refreshing LGBTQ representation and is, overall, just fantastic female empowerment viewing. Plus, Riot Women gets the added bonus of having terrific original music that you won’t want to stop listening to.

Georgia Wells (Kate Beckinsale) has been a widow ever since her husband, Will (Matthew Le Nevez), died tragically in a plane crash three years prior. In her grief, Georgia retreats to an isolated life in the Welsh countryside, but that all changes when she spots a man who looks shockingly like Will in the background of a news report in Congo. Determined to prove that Will is still alive, Georgia travels to the Congo and reunites with Will’s business partner (Alex Kingston). But Georgia remains unaware of the danger she faces in searching for her late husband.

The cliffhangers at the end of each episode of The Widow will have you tearing through the season at a brisk clip, and the premise hooks you instantly from the jump. Ultimately, The Widow boasts an old-fashioned type of mystery thriller that is supremely watchable and cinematic. While the overstuffed narrative may occasionally be too ambitious, Beckinsale’s compelling lead performance makes it all worthwhile.

At one point or another, we all suspect one of our neighbors is up to no good, and that’s exactly what happens with Huw Miller (Jason Watkins) in BritBox’s tantalizing new mystery series, The Game. Huw is a veteran police detective still haunted by a past case involving a serial killer who toyed with his victims before killing them. 

Huw never got his man, but he thinks he may have a second chance at victory when Patrick Harbottle (Robson Green) moves in next door. After Patrick says the phrase ‘catch you later’ – the serial killer’s signature send-off to the authorities he taunted all those years ago — Huw believes he’s found his man. The hard part now is trying to gather enough evidence to put Patrick away for good. 

Shetland is one of Britain’s most popular crime shows, so it’s not surprising it’s back for an impressive 10th season. Detectives Calder (Ashley Jensen) and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) return for a new mystery, one that will test all their skills as veteran inspectors.

In the small hamlet of Lunniswick, an elderly woman has been brutally killed. A retired social worker, the woman has been missing for some time, so when Calder and Tosh find her body, it’s badly decomposed and devoid of much physical evidence. Who killed her and why? The answers may change Lunniswick forever and rattle the crime-solving duo who think they’ve seen it all.

British comedian and impersonator Tracey Ullman is one of the funniest women alive. Don’t believe me? Then watch Tracey Ullman’s Show, a hilarious sketch comedy show that originally aired on the BBC from 2016-2018.

Expect to see a lot of skits lampooning the major cultural figures of the day, like then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former British Prime Minister Theresa May, various royals like Camilla Parker Bowles and more. My favorite is her impersonation of esteemed actress Judi Dench, who is depicted here as a criminal who uses her image as a nice, soft-spoken lady to steal things and cause terror for people she doesn’t like. It’s hilarious, but then again, what skit isn’t in Tracey Ullman’s Show?

This period drama takes place in Yorkshire in the 1890s and details a working-class family who progressively move from working fish docks to working in the lap of luxury. When the family patriarch suffers an accident, they lose their income but begin a booming business selling fried herring. Eventually, the family can move into a vast estate, where they experience the hardships that come with class mobility and social tensions.

Critics enjoyed the escapist qualities of this light drama that favors establishing the family itself over going all-in on high-stakes melodrama. With terrific performances, well-designed sets and a solid story, it’s easy to follow along with the Hardacre family as they find their way into fortune.

Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Louise Doughty, this four-part series stars Emily Watson as Yvonne Carmichael, a married mother of two adult children who appears to have it all. However, Yvonne is deeply unsatisfied with her life, and it drives her to begin an affair with a mysterious man named Mark Costley (Ben Chaplin), whom she knows little about. Ultimately, Yvonne’s choices may cost her her perfect life.

Apple Tree Yard received high marks from critics for its generous exploration of female sexuality and self-deception, along with a suspenseful and well-paced plot, rich characters and an unwillingness to give viewers an easy answer. For her performance, Watson was nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Actress.

Fans of Downton Abbey will probably like Belgravia since it’s from the same writer, Julian Fellowes. This time, the focus is on several aristocratic families in mid-19th-century England. They’re all linked by a scandalous event that occurred decades ago at a ball in Belgravia, which threatens everyone from a Countess (Harriet Walter) to a commoner who could be the bastard heir to one of Britain’s richest families.

Belgravia has a bigger budget and more impressive costumes than its sister series, but it’s soapier and, to this author, more fun. The cast is full of England’s best and mostly unknown character actors, but a standout is Fallout actress Ella Purnell as Lady Maria Grey. Originally airing on Epix, Belgravia’s entire six-episode first season is now streaming.

Even in Britain, adult children don’t much care for visiting their family for dinner. It’s an embarrassing weekly ritual that’s mined for laughs in the sitcom Friday Night Dinner, which aired from 2011 to 2020. BritBox is streaming the first two seasons of the long-running show, and they’re arguably the best.

Every Friday, sons Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) make the weekly trek to their North London home to spend Shabbat dinner with their eccentric mother Jackie (Tamsin Grieg), ketchup-loving dad Martin (Paul Ritter) and bikini-wearing nana Nellie (Frances Cuka). Chaos inevitably ensues, with Adam and Johnny usually pranking each other or their noisy neighbor Jim (Mark Heap), who has a crush on Jackie. If this sounds like your standard American sitcom, well, it largely is, but Friday Night Dinner sports a distinct English brand of self-deprecating humor that makes it stand out from the pack.

The second season of this noir series hits BritBox this month, as the exploits of young detective sergeant Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle) continue in her investigation of a 25-year-old cold case. Based on the series of Inspector Karen Pirie novels, Karen Pirie is a clever and enthralling crime drama that is further bolstered by a good sense of humor and genuine charm. Refreshing and unique, Karen Pirie‘s female-led detective show breathes new life into an old genre.

When Pirie is promoted to Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit, the young woman finds herself reopening an unsolved case from 1995. In her investigation, she realizes that there were a number of flaws and loose threads in the original police inquiry. The murder of a barmaid by an unknown assailant gets a fresh pair of eyes in Kirie, as well as interest from a popular true-crime podcast.

In this acclaimed crime drama, a gifted but insecure psychologist named Dr. Tony Hill (Robson Green) treats a very unique type of patient: serial criminals. However, Hill can express empathy for both the victims as well as the perpetrators that he treats, and he proves himself to be indispensable to the authorities in tracking down killers. The series follows Hill as he assists the police in finding a new killer each episode.

Wire in the Blood ran from 2002 to 2008 and was based on a series of novels by author Val McDermid. The procedural is a must for fans of dark, gritty crime shows, but with some genuinely disturbing material in many of its episodes, it isn’t for the faint of heart. Still, a strong narrative and compelling performances make it hard to stop watching.

Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley novels are beloved in Britain and have already been adapted into an equally admired series that ran from 2001 to 2007. The famous detective is back in a reimagined TV series, Lynley, with Vikings: Valhalla actor Leo Suter taking on the title role.

Born into privilege, Lynley forgoes the easy life to become a hard-working detective solving crimes in the English countryside. Not everyone is pleased with his arrival, though, particularly new partner Barbara Havers (Sofia Barclay). She doesn’t think he has what it takes to make it as an inspector, while he believes she isn’t as good as she thinks she is. They’ll have to find a way to work together to solve the many mysteries they’re assigned, or they’ll both be out of a job.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare — the child you’ve loved and raised isn’t actually yours. That’s what happens to Pete (Grantchester‘s James Norton) and Maddie (Niamh Algar), who are informed that their 5-year-old, Theo (Alban Guo), is not their biological child due to a mistake at their local hospital. Soon, they meet Theo’s real parents and come to an agreement — they’ll each keep the child they’ve raised and allow both boys to see their blood relatives. But their best laid plans are soon spoiled by mutual suspicion over each couple’s true intentions. 

Playing Nice is an absorbing series that milks every bit of drama out of its juicy premise. It presents an impossible situation to its two lead couples and chronicles how they try to find an easy answer to a hard question. Could you still love your child even if you knew he or she didn’t really belong to you? The beauty of the four-episode series is watching how each mother and father answers that question in their own devastating way.

Clive Owen is now a star, but 25 years ago he was just another struggling actor looking for his big break. He got it with Second Sight, a British detective series that ran for two six-episode seasons on BBC One. And while some of the digital camerawork is very much of its time, the show still holds up thanks to its intriguing cases, evocative, dreamlike score and Owen’s captivating lead performance.

Owen stars as Ross Tanner, a well-respected London detective who is hiding a secret — he’s slowly going blind. Only his partner, Catherine Tully (Claire Skinner), knows what’s going on, but she won’t say anything about his condition until he comes to terms with what’s happening. Meanwhile, there are several crimes to be solved, including the murder of a groom-to-be at a stag night and the mysterious death of a young child.

This sweet six-episode mini-series tells the true story of George Mottershead (Lee Ingleby), a WWI veteran who created the Chester Zoo in the 1930s. Amidst financial constraints and community resistance, George and his family face numerous challenges as they bring to life George’s vision of a more humane haven for animals — a zoo without bars.

The talented ensemble, which includes Liz White as Lizzie Mottershead, Anne Reid as Lucy Mottershead and Ralph Little as Billy Atkinson, tells a story of resilience with warmth and nostalgia. It’s a wholesome portrayal of a family’s dedication to an ambitious, compassionate project during a turbulent period in history. You’ll love the period-accurate production design and the clever narrative about sanctuary, both for the animals and for the family itself.

Catastrophe and Bad Sisters writer Sharon Horgan is one of the creators of this hilarious sitcom, which offers a dry and cynical look into the chaotic lives of middle-class mothers and their daily struggles to balance family, children, and work. Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin) is a career-driven mom trying to juggle her demanding job with the overwhelming responsibilities of motherhood — but her work-life balance is forever changed when her own mother (Ellie Haddington) announces she will no longer help with childcare.

As she learns to juggle her new parenting responsibilities, Julia befriends fellow struggling parents: Liz (Diane Morgan), who is laid-back and carefree; Kevin (Paul Ready), a stay-at-home dad; and the overly organized and seemingly perfect alpha mom, Amanda (Lucy Punch). Relatable and painfully honest, Motherland is a must-watch for any parent.

Are you ready for your next mystery show obsession? Because once you start watching Death Valley, you probably can’t stop until the last episode is over.

John Chapel (Harry Potter star Timothy Spall) is restless and bored. A beloved actor best known for playing a popular detective on TV, his retirement has so far proven to be a bit dull and uninspiring. But when John’s neighbor turns up dead, he’s inspired to solve the case himself. He’s helped by Detective Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth), who actually has experience solving crimes, and together, the duo solves numerous crimes in and around their sleepy Welsh village.

Death Valley works as both a mystery and a comedy, and that’s largely due to Spall, who imbues Chapel with enough wit and charm to make him a hero you want to root for — and sometimes strangle. He’s a quintessential British mystery lead — frustrating, eccentric and irresistible. That also describes Death Valley, a show you hope will have many more seasons in its future.

Apart from true crime enthusiasts, not many people outside of England know who Dennis Nilsen was. But those who do still shiver at the memory of the reign of terror he unleashed in the 1970s, and how his legacy still haunts some to this day.

David Tennant stars as Nilsen, a lonely, closeted Scottish man who began murdering gay men in the late 1970s. No one notices what Nilsen is doing, or how many people he’s killed, until the dismembered remains of one of his victims clog up his building’s plumbing.

That’s only part of Des, which chronicles the before and after of Nilsen’s serial murder spree and subsequent trial. The three-episode series is dark and heavy, but it’s always involving and features Tennant’s best performance. He gives you a glimpse into the heart of evil, and you won’t soon forget it.

When a union activist is shot with an arrow and killed, a small Nottinghamshire village is torn apart by fear and suspicion. No one knows who did it or why, but Detective Ian St Clair (David Morrissey) believes it has something to do with a miners’ strike that happened in 1985. The key to the mystery might lie with the dead man’s widow, Julie Jackson (Lesley Manville), who knows more than she realizes. Can Ian find out who the killer is before they strike again?

Based on a real-life incident in 2004, Sherwood is a mystery so involving, you may have to binge all of season 1’s six episodes in one sitting. A good reason why is Manville, who is terrific as the no-nonsense Julie. She returns in Sherwood’s second season, which tackles another mystery involving a gang-related murder. 

Those who live outside of Britain may not have heard of the Mitford sisters, six siblings who defied conventions and became famous — and infamous — in the 1930s, but Outrageous will surely change that. The six-episode series chronicles the lives of the upper-class Mitford sisters as they pursue their careers — and romantic partners — in the Great Depression. Some of the sisters include Nancy (Bessie Carter), who yearns to be a popular writer, and Jessica (Zoe Brough), who wants to use her privileged status to bring light to revolutionary causes.

Outrageous lives up to its title — it’s an entertaining portrait of a family who touch all levels of English society. The show specializes in getting the look and feel of the period just right, and it spotlights a truly interesting cast of real-life characters who have been largely forgotten about today. The show begins streaming on June 18.

Barry Walker (Lennie James) is a respected member of his community, a devoted father to his grown-up daughters and a loving husband to his wife of over 50 years, Carmel (Sharon D. Clark). But Carmel suspects her husband may be cheating on her with another woman, and she’s determined to find out who it is. What she discovers proves she’s both right and wrong as Barry is indeed being unfaithful to her — with another man.

Instead of exploiting the soapy aspects of its plot, Mr. Loverman instead devotes most of its sympathetic attention to chronicling Barry’s unexpected coming-out to his family and friends and the ramifications it has on all of them. The series is surprisingly delicate and complicated in its approach to love and marriage, and it gives James and Clark, both respected actors of the English stage and screen, two meaty roles to showcase their considerable talents.

Gabe (Sion Daniel Young) and Andy (Fra Fee) have been together for eight years and want to start a family. But the adoption process in England is long and arduous, particularly for a gay couple, and Gabe and Andy disagree on what kind of child they want and how that child should be raised. Even if they are approved to adopt, what will life be like now that they are new parents with new responsibilities?

Lost Boys and Fairies looks like a straightforward drama, but it’s also a sweet rom-com about growing up with the one you love and a musical filled with extravagant production numbers. (Gabe is a performance artist at a local gay bar.) It’s a little bit of everything, which makes the show so entertaining and special to watch.

Jack Wright (Trevor Eve) dies at the beginning of I, Jack Wright, and no, that’s no spoiler. But the titular character’s demise is just the beginning of the drama and mystery that his immediate family is plunged into when Jack seemingly dies by suicide. Even worse, he left his third wife, Sally (Nikki Amuka-Bird), and two sons out of the will.

It’s not like Jack to do either of those things, which is why Sally thinks something’s amiss. Could her husband have been murdered and his will changed without his knowledge? That’s the heart of I, Jack Wright’s intriguing mystery, and why it’s already one of the most bingeable British shows of 2025. 

Nobody asked for an Agatha Christie adaptation with steamy sex scenes, but we got one with Towards Zero. The three-episode series stars Oscar winner Anjelica Huston as Lady Tressilian, a rich widow who invites some guests to her seaside property for a house party. A murder occurs, of course, and suspicion falls on the party’s guests, which include a disgraced tennis star (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and his new wife (Mimi Keene). Inspector Leach (Matthew Rhys) is on the case, but can he find the murderer before he — or she — strikes again?

Towards Zero is a fun adaptation of a largely forgotten Christie novel that changes just enough to make the story feel modern. Jackson-Cohen is a dashing suspect, and Huston has a ball cracking mean jokes as the bedridden matriarch. 

John “Ludwig” Taylor (David Mitchell) doesn’t like people all that much. A recluse, he prefers to stay inside and indulge in his primary passion — making puzzles. But when his twin detective brother, James, disappears, he’s forced to impersonate him to find out what happened. To make matters more stressful, he has to use his skills as a puzzlemaker to solve crimes in his brother’s absence.

Ludwig uses its far-fetched premise to create a hugely entertaining mystery show that’s also a fish-out-of-water comedy. With the aid of his brother’s wife, Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), Ludwig has to be as charming and outgoing as his brother is while solving crimes. He’s not usually successful, which results in awkward scenarios that are pure comedy gold.

If you miss Monk and want a murder mystery series that isn’t all that serious, check out Ludwig. It’s one of the best-reviewed shows of 2025 and has already been renewed for a second season.

A crude joke told at a party could be one man’s downfall in the excellent three-episode drama Douglas Is Cancelled. The man in question, Douglas Bellowes (Hugh Bonneville), is a longtime news anchor with a journalist wife (Alex Kingston), a coanchor who looks up to him (Karen Gillan) and the respect of his peers. But when a tweet alleging he told a sexist joke at a wedding starts to gain traction, Douglas is forced to defend the things he has always taken for granted.

Douglas Is Cancelled examines the role of social media, journalism and gender politics in the post-#MeToo era. If that sounds serious, relax  — the show has that wicked humor the Brits have refined for centuries. Bonneville is fine as the hapless Douglas, but it’s Kingston and Gillan who shine as the main women in his life, who aren’t exactly pleased with his behavior.

The spirit of Twin Peaks lives on in Passenger, a seemingly typical police procedural that’s accentuated with dashes of weirdness. Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wumni Mosaku) has been working in the small town of Chadder Vale for five years, and she’s grown a bit bored. But when a young girl mysteriously disappears, she gets more than she bargained for as a series of strange incidents suggests something otherworldly is at play.

Passenger isn’t perfect — it’s about two episodes too long, and the plot is a bit of a mess. But it conjures a creepy vibe that recalls David Lynch’s seminal ’90s drama, and the synth-heavy score and moody visuals will cause you to look over your shoulder more than once.

Charming, handsome and suave — you may think you know Cary Grant, but you’d be mistaken. “Cary Grant” was just another role the actor played and was a carefully constructed persona by Archibald “Archie” Leach, Grant’s real name and identity.

Over four episodes, Archie examines how a poor British boy who was kicked out of school and worked as a traveling acrobat became one of the most popular movie stars ever. The White Lotus season 3 star Jason Isaacs is unrecognizable as the older Grant, who, at the peak of his fame in the ’60s, is unhappy with his current role in life. Archie is less a hagiography of a beloved icon and more a dissection of what made Archie/Grant tick, as well as an exploration of how he never reconciled with the past he was so desperate to cover up.

It’s 1954, and all Luke Fitzwilliam (David Jonsson) wants to do is board his train on time and rest. He gets more than he bargained for when he meets Miss Pinkerton (Penelope Wilton), who tells him about a mysterious string of deaths happening in a nearby small village. When Miss Pinkerton herself is killed, Luke decides to avenge and capture the killer at any cost.

Murder Is Easy is a typical Agatha Christie tale, but this adaptation is a little livelier than the rest. That’s primarily due to the casting of Jonsson and Wilton, who both bring a sense of fun and mischief to their roles. The production values are top-notch, and the mystery is good enough to keep you guessing throughout the show’s two episodes.

True crime aficionados will surely enjoy The Pembrokeshire Murders, a three-episode dramatization of the dramatic capture of Welsh serial killer John Cooper. In 2006, Detective Steve Wilkins (Luke Evans) reopens two cold cases that were never solved. Both involved random acts of murder, and the only thing linking them is a series of burglaries that could hold the clue to the killer. Facing resistance from his peers, Steve becomes obsessed with cracking the case and bringing the killer to justice over 20 years after the crimes were committed.

The Pembrokeshire Murders is set in Wales, which isn’t your typical location for a murder mystery. That alone sets it apart from the others in the genre, but the show’s incredible true story is gripping, and Evans is good as a stoic protagonist. The series is three episodes long and is based on the book The Pembrokeshire Murders: Catching the Bullseye Killer by Wilkins.
