It’s the crossover that American Horror Story fans have been waiting for. Apocalypse, the eighth installment of FX’s horror drama, will be a mixture of Coven and Murder House, but what’s it about and who will it include? Us Weekly has gathered every bit of information available about the new season.
The new season, which will begin “with the end of the world,” according to executive producer Alexis Martin Woodall, will feature most of the key witches from season 3. On August 19, Ryan Murphy shared a photo of the witches in what looked like it could have been a cast photo from Coven. It included Taissa Farmiga as Zoe Benson, Gabourey Sidibe as Queenie, Frances Conroy as Myrtle Snow, Sarah Paulson as Cordelia Goode, Stevie Nicks as Stevie Nicks, Lily Rabe as Misty Day and Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery. Oddly enough, at the end of Coven, Zoe, Cordelia and Nicks were the only three alive.
While Farmiga’s Coven character survived, her Murder House one – Violet Harmon – did not. At the end of season 1, the entire Harmon family, with the exception of the evil baby, were killed and locked in that house for eternity. She will reprise both roles in season 8.
Leave it up to Sarah Paulson to play not one, not two, but three characters this season. While reprising her roles as the Supreme from Coven and Billie Dean Howard from Murder House, she’ll also be playing a new character named Venable. Viewers got their first look at her in a teaser posted on August 23. She appears to be some sort of lottery operator who chooses who survives and who dies.
Jessica Lange will make her Horror Story return for the first time since season 4. Reprising her Murder House character, Constance Langdon, Lange will appear in episode six of Apocalypse, which will be directed by Paulson. Constance was last seen taking care of Michael Langdon, the Harmon’s evil baby whom she adopted.
Murder House fans, rejoice! On Tuesday, August 28, Murphy confirmed that Evan Peters will be playing Tate Langdon from the first season of American Horror Story. Tate committed a mass shooting, killing 15 students, during Murder House, and then was killed in his bedroom. He lives in the Murder House home as a ghost; he dressed up as Rubber Man and raped Vivien Harmon, becoming the father of her devil child, Michael.
In addition to the witches, this season will also include many other faces from Murphy’s magical world. Leslie Grossman is playing Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt, Billie Lourd will play Mallory, Adina Porter plays Dinah Stevens, and Kathy Bates plays Miss Meade. Cheyenne Jackson and Billy Eichner will also appear, but their characters have not yet been revealed. “It’s a season unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it. There’s a huge thing that happens in episode five,” Murphy said in June.
Speaking of familiar faces, Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton, the stars of Murder House, are also set to return as Ben and Vivien Harmon. As previously noted, all of the Harmon family was killed, but since they’ve reportedly been filming their scenes at the Murder House home, it’s safe to assume the Harmon family’s spirits will be featured. Britton only appeared in the first season of Horror Story while McDermott also had a role in season 2, Asylum.
It wouldn’t be American Horror Story without Peters. The actor, who’s appeared in every season, will play a hairdresser this season, in addition to playing Tate. There’s not much revealed about his story line other than his grandmother will be played by the iconic Joan Collins.
American Horror Story: Apocalypse premieres on FX Wednesday, September 12, at 10 p.m. ET.
