Everything to Know About Prime Video's 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Series

A coming-of-age love story! The Summer I Turned Pretty is a highly anticipated adaptation of a trilogy written by Jenny Han that explores love, friendship and family. The first season will introduce viewers to Belly, who catches the eye of her longtime friends Conrad Fisher and Jeremiah Fisher. The brothers develop an interest in Belly after spending their summers at the beach together. For Han, 41, the long wait to bring the story to screen made her worry about how longtime fans would react to the series. "I just really want them to feel satisfied by the long wait and feel like the story has come to life in the way that they were hoping for. I hope fans swoon a lot," the author told Entertainment Weekly in March 2022. "The first time I walked on set, I cried." The Virginia native noted that she wasn't looking to recreate the series straight from the page. "It's about distilling what are the most important pieces of the story, and I hinged it around those big moments that I thought were really important to the fans," Han, who also wrote the To All the Boys I've Loved Before series, added. "I continually asked myself, what do the fans care most about, what do they want to see the most, what are those big tentpole moments, and trying to make sure that I deliver those while still allowing myself room to expand and find new ways into the story." Even though the story may introduce new stories, Han teased that readers were taken into account during the development process. "We'll see the night swims and big crushes and all those sort of big, epic love moments this season. I did try to drop in a lot of Easter eggs throughout the series for the fans of the books," she hinted. "It's all the thrill and excitement of first love and what it's like to really love someone from afar your whole life and then suddenly be interacting with them in a new way." Han also pointed out that The Summer I Turned Pretty will explore the different kinds of love — including platonic connections. "It really is about growing up and coming into your own and that loss of innocence. The first season is really just the beginning of it," Han continued. "When I started writing it, I realized I needed more space to tell the story. I feel the same way about TV — I think that novels actually lend themselves really well to TV because you just get a lot more time to really delve into the characters and be with them on their journey." Who Stars in the Show?

Lola Tung stars as Belly in the highly anticipated adaption. The Fisher boys are portrayed by Christopher Briney (Conrad) and Gavin Casalegno (Jeremiah).

Jackie Chung has been cast as Belly's mother and Rachel Blanchard will be playing Susannah Fisher.

The cast will also include Sean Kaufman as Steven, Minnie Mills as Shayla and Alfredo Narciso as Cleveland.

How is Taylor Swift Involved?

In May 2022, a teaser trailer for the show included Swift's "This Love (Taylor's Version)" from her upcoming 1989 (Taylor's Version) album.

"I've always been so proud of this song and I'm very 🥺🥺🥺 about this turn of events - This Love (Taylor's Version) comes out tonight at m i d n i g h t!" the singer wrote via Instagram at the time.

Will the 2nd and 3rd Books Be Adapted?

With the first season based on The Summer I Turned Pretty, possible future seasons would follow the story lines in It's Not Summer Without You and We'll Always Have Summer.

In June 2022, Prime Video renewed the series for a second season before the show's debut.

What Did the Trailer Reveal?

In May 2022, Prime Video released an official trailer that featured a glimpse at Belly's entrance into the debutante scene as brothers Conrad and Jeremiah both deal with their new romantic feelings for her.

Team Conrad vs. Team Jeremiah?

In June 2022, Briney and Casalegno opened up about how their bond grew as they played onscreen brothers.

"Honestly, from the second we met I knew it would be easy. I don't have a brother, but I feel like I can now imagine what it is like to have a brother," the Connecticut native exclusively told Us Weekly. "I think we pretty naturally just had a dynamic [of] people that get along."

Casalegno, for his part, praised the chance to work alongside Briney, adding, "I feel like it was a very brotherly relationship from the get-go. It was really cool. I've never had an older brother, so to kind of grow with Chris on screen, it was so much fun to explore."

How Did the 'Summer I Turned Pretty' Cast Bond?

During an interview with Us, Tung and Kaufman recalled exploring Belly and Steven's sibling bond during season 1. "This guy is just the best. I'm very thankful for our relationship. I never had an older sibling either and it was very easy to feel like I did and to create that relationship onscreen because we had such a wonderful bond off screen too," the actress detailed in June 2022.

The Manifest alum noted that Tung "makes it so easy" to work together on set. "Everybody knows this. If you've watched this show already, Lola is absolutely unbelievable. I mean undeniably talented and just an unbelievable person and human being and she made it just so easy every day on set for me," he gushed. "I have a younger sister in real life and that made it even easier. Lola's the second best sister I've ever had. Going to set every day and just knowing that I get to love this person as my sister, and that itself lends to fighting and quarrels, and bickering, whatever that comes out of love. It was so easy and she made it so fun."

How Was the Music Important?

After season 1 premiered, fans were quick to applaud The Summer I Turned Pretty for using Taylor Swift's songs throughout the episodes.

During an interview with Tung, the actress told Us that the show's approach to music was "perfect."

Casalegno also weighed in on his favorite songs from the season. "I will say is there are some scenes between Jeremiah and Belly that have some pretty amazing music," he told Us in June 2022. "I don't know if it's in the final cut, but those songs just like really hit the spot."
