The Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry, began with Star Trek: The Original Series, which aired on NBC for three seasons from 1966 to 1969. The series followed the voyages of the crew of USS Enterprise as they explored space, seeking new life and civilizations. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the first film and premiered in 1979.

A revival series titled The Next Generation aired in the ‘80s and centered around a new crew following the events of the Original Series. The film franchise underwent a reboot in 2009 and created an alternate universe known as “the Kelvin timeline,” which produced three films: Star Trek, Into Darkness and Beyond.

The Original Series earned a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1967. One of the most successful films was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which was nominated at the 59th Academy Awards for cinematography. 2009’s Star Trek which earned the franchise its first Academy Award for makeup and hairstyling.
