Transparent centers around the Pfefferman family and their journey of acceptance after learning their parent is a trans woman named Maura (Jeffrey Tambor).

Maura has three children — Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass) and Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) — who each have different reactions to her coming out Other characters include Maura’s ex-wife and mother of the Pfefferman children, Shelly (Judith Light), and Josh’s ex-fiancé Rabbi Raquel Fein (Kathryn Hahn).

Tambor quit the show in 2017 after being accused of sexual harassment on set and was officially fired one year later.

Transparent premiered in 2014. The series won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in 2015, the same year Tambor won Best Actor. The fifth and final season of the series premiered in 2019 in the form of a musical. In 2023, a theatrical adaptation of the show called A Transparent Musical was staged in Los Angeles.
