Tony Romo made his name as a Pro Bowl quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, but the former NFL player can apparently compete with a three-time major champion on the golf course.

If pro golfer Scottie Scheffler is to be believed, Romo, 45, once took down Jordan Spieth in a round of golf.

“He’s beat Jordan before, so shout-out to Jordan for that,” Scheffler, 29, told reporters at the RBC Heritage on Thursday, April 16. “But he hasn’t beaten me yet. I’m not going to say that he can’t because he’s a good golfer, so I’m definitely not going to go out and say that he can’t, and we also play a lot of golf together, and in golf you never really know what’s going to happen.”

Scheffler’s comments were in response to Romo’s claim in a Time Magazine essay that he could beat the current world No. 1. The essay was for Scheffler’s spot on Time’s 100 Most Influential People list.

“I think he’ll remain at the top for years to come because of the pure joy he has grabbing a golf club and hitting a golf ball,” Romo wrote in the essay, published Wednesday, April 15. “Although I’m going to beat him one day. I have every faith.”

Scheffler and Romo both live in Dallas and are close friends, so there will surely be plenty of chances for the former QB to prove his mettle on the course.

Scheffler, for his part, said he has learned plenty from Romo, who is now the lead NFL color analyst for CBS Sports.

“Just to see how he goes through life as a family man and as someone who is on TV all the time,” Scheffler said. “He was the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, so he has a better understanding than I do of what it’s like to be in the spotlight, and I’m fortunate to have the ability to bounce stuff off of him.”

He continued, “How he handles his sponsorship days or how he handles media or pictures when he goes out to dinner, little stuff like that I feel like I’ve just learned a lot from him about how to navigate being a professional athlete while also trying to be a family man.”

Scheffler is fresh off a second-place finish at the 2026 Masters, where he finished just behind back-to-back winner Rory McIlroy.

Though he came up short, Scheffler still had plenty to be excited about. His wife, Meredith Scheffler, joined him as his caddy for the annual Par 3 contest just 12 days after giving birth to the couple’s second son, Remy. (They also share Bennett, 23 months.)

“This is what it’s all about!” Scottie wrote via Instagram on April 8 alongside a family picture from the course at Augusta National. “Remy made his big debut and we are officially a family of four.”
