They were not amused. During Amy Schumer’s Tampa, Florida, show on Sunday, October 16, about 200 audience members booed and walked out after the comedian mocked Donald Trump, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
At one point in the night, the jokes turned political, and Schumer — an avid Hillary Clinton supporter, feminist and gun control advocate — called the Republican presidential nominee, 70, an “orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster.”
The Trainwreck star, 35, brought a Trump supporter on stage to explain why he’s voting for the billionaire (he cited national security policies as his main reason). “Do you get worried at all with how impulsive he is?” she asked him. “That he gets so fired up from Saturday Night Live doing a skit on him … do you worry he’ll be impulsive and get us in a lot of f–king trouble we can’t get out of?”
The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo author also alluded to the several allegations against Trump of sexual misconduct and the recently surfaced video of his 2005 comments to then-Access Hollywood host Billy Bush, calling them “really triggering.” She also joked that the former Apprentice star “wants to finger his daughter.”
When a small percentage of the crowd started to express their disapproval of the political talk, she invited them to go to the bathroom for the bit or leave. “Of course, we’re in Florida, you’re going to boo,” she said. The jeering continued and Schumer said, “From now on if you yell out, you’re going to get thrown out.”
Several disgruntled fans let their feelings be heard on social media. “Keep politics to yourself. Tampa show tonight [was a] disappointment,” one audience member wrote, while another added, “You ruined my night. Spent $300 for a comedy show. Then you went on a political path that was rude and disrespectful to Tampa.”
Schumer later told Vanity Fair that despite the backlash, she enjoyed performing for the Tampa residents. “I loved the crowd and my show in Tampa last night!” she said. “I want to thank the 8,400 people who stayed. We had a great time! We have always depended on comedians to make us laugh and tell the truth. I am proud of that tradition.”
