Harry Shum Jr.

Harry Shum Jr. is a Costa Rican-born Chinese American actor, dancer and choreographer best known for playing Mike Chang on Glee, Magnus Bane on Shadowhunters and Dr. Benson Kwan on Grey’s Anatomy. Shum spent his early years in Limón, Costa Rica, and moved with his family to San Francisco at age 6. He attended Arroyo Grande High School, where he was initially interested in acting and football. After being dared by friends to audition for his high school dance team, he discovered a passion for dance. He later attended San Francisco State University but left shortly after enrolling to pursue a career as a professional dancer.

Shum began his entertainment career as a dancer, appearing on BET’s Comic View and performing in music videos, commercials and live shows. He also worked as a backup dancer for artists including Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez. He later transitioned into acting, making early appearances in films including You Got Served (2004), Stomp the Yard (2007) and Step Up 2: The Streets (2008).

In 2009, Shum joined the cast of Glee as Mike Chang, a role that significantly raised his public profile. He later starred in Shadowhunters as Magnus Bane and, in 2022, he joined Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Benson Kwan. He has also appeared on the big screen in films such as Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) and Voicemails for Isabelle (2026). He was awarded a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the Glee ensemble and later earned an ensemble nomination for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Shum began dating actress and dancer Shelby Rabara in 2007. They became engaged in 2013 and married in Costa Rica in November 2015. The couple welcomed their daughter, Xia, in 2019.
