Taye Diggs

Taye Diggs (born Scott Leo Berry) is an award-winning actor known for his work in Broadway’s Rent, films including How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Chicago and television series such as Private Practice. Diggs was raised in Rochester, New York, as the eldest of five children. He attended School of the Arts in Rochester before earning a bachelor’s degree in musical theater from Syracuse University in 1993.

Diggs got his start on stage, making his Broadway debut in the ensemble of Carousel in 1994 before originating the role of Benny in Rent in 1996. He went on to make his film debut in How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998), which helped establish him as a leading man. Throughout his career, he has starred in films including The Best Man (1999), Equilibrium (2002), Chicago (2002), Set It Up (2018) and Another Man’s Wife (2026). He also starred in the 2005 film adaptation of Rent.

On television, Diggs has starred in series including Kevin Hill, Private Practice, Murder in the First, Empire and All American. He has also lent his voice to projects including Elena of Avalor and Disney Jr.’s Ariel.

Diggs married actress and singer Idina Menzel in 2003 after meeting during the original Broadway production of Rent. They welcomed son Walker Nathaniel in 2009 before divorcing in 2014. He later dated real estate agent Amanza Smith from 2014 to 2019 and actress Apryl Jones from 2021 to 2023.
