Celebrity Moms Who Ate Their Own Placentas

Placenta eating may be controversial with doctors, but many celebrity moms have been all over the trend, from Kailyn Lowry to Alicia Silverstone. "Someone gifted me my placenta in the form of a pill,” the Clueless star wrote in her Kind Mama book, which was published in April 2014. "They encapsulate it. And I have to tell you that I really loved it.” The actress went on to write, "It’s cool if others disagree. Everything that’s in the book is there to show you why you might want to consider it but never to say you have to choose it, always just to give you information and show you that if you don’t choose that, that’s totally fine.” The Golden Globe nominee gave birth to son Bear three years prior with her then-husband, Christopher Jarecki. The former couple split in February 2018 and continue to coparent amicably. In fact, Silverstone wouldn’t mind asking the singer for help conceiving another child, she told Working Mother magazine seven months after their breakup. "I have always dreamed of having a little girl, but of course I want another little Bear too,” The Baby-Sitters Club star added in September 2018. "So whatever happens, if it happens, is good by me. I’m not in a relationship, but there are other ways to make babies.” [jwplayer vHi7IYKe-zhNYySv2] As for Lowry, the Teen Mom 2 star consumed her placenta after two of her four sons’ arrivals. The MTV personality ate it in pill form in 2013, then as a smoothie in 2020. "Blended with fresh fruit & almond milk,” the 16 and Pregnant alum wrote via Instagram Stories of the latter. "Couldn't taste the placenta at all!” Hilary Duff was also a fan of the smoothie option when her daughter Banks was born in October 2018. The How I Met Your Father star additionally chose to ingest her placenta drink in the form of ice cubes at the time. Twilight’s Nikki Reed opted for pills the previous year when she welcomed her and Ian Somerhalder’s baby girl, Bodhi. In May 2021, Challenge alum Abram Boise’s then-wife, Rachel Missie, ate hers fried on an egg sandwich in May 2021. Odette Annable

The You Again actress revealed via Instagram in October 2022 that she was using Mommy Made Encapsulation to consume her placenta after welcoming her second child, daughter Andersen, earlier in the month. Annable pointed out the benefits to the product, noting that eating a placenta helps with “postpartum recovery, enhances breast milk supply” and more.

Mandy Moore

In March 2021, Moore revealed during an appearance on the “Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast” that she was ingesting her placenta in capsule form after giving birth to her son Gus one month prior.

The This Is Us alum hopped on the growing trend again in October 2022, taking to social media to share a snap of a pill bottle with the label, “Made By You, For You. Filled With Your Placenta and a Whole Lot of Love,” after giving birth to her second child - son Ozzie. 

“Round 2 with @feelgoodplacenta,” Moore captioned the Instagram snap.

Sharna Burgess

In July 2022, the Dancing With the Stars pro opened up about the decision to eat her placenta after giving birth. “I highly recommend this,” she shared during an Instagram Q&A. “I had my placenta picked up by our baby nurse who is also a doula. She processed my placenta … and put it into capsules for me.”

Burgess, who welcomed son Zane with Brian Austin Green in June 2022, noted that she took the pills twice a day. “My recovery has been amazing and my mood and milk the whole time have been positive," she added.

The Bachelor in Paradise alum told her Instagram followers in February 2022 that she encapsulated her placenta after second son Reed’s November 2020 birth, writing, “Having two babies very close together, it was important to me to try anything and everything to help my body recover and heal. … I felt like I had a much smoother recovery hormonally and energy-wise. I also think it’s an innate thing for mammals to eat their afterbirth, so I believe there has to be important nutrients that we need in there.”

I suggest it to all moms!”

Lakshmi revealed in her memoir Love, Loss, and What We Ate that she had her placenta powdered and encapsulated in pill form after the birth of her daughter, Krishna, because she feared postpartum depression. Wrote the Top Chef host: "I would have done anything to defend myself against collapsing from stress and fatigue and succumbing to the postpartum depression I was so afraid would beset me.”
