Bye, hater! Michelle Williams had the perfect response to a nosey fan who noticed her absence from Beyoncé‘s new visual album, Black Is King.
“When you’re trying to figure out what your favs are from #BlackIsKing! Ehhhhhhh just post ’em all!! 🖤💛,” Williams, 41, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, August 2, alongside a handful of photos from the Disney+ musical film, which featured cameos from Jay-Z, Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong’o and Kelly Rowland.
“Where you at in the film tho??” a follower commented, to which the former Destiny’s Child member replied, “I’m in the upper right corner minding my business!”
The visual album was released on Friday, July 31, and acts as a “celebratory memoir” of the Black experience. “The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future,” Disney and Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment said in a statement before the film’s debut.
Though she didn’t appear in the Disney project, Williams has a long history with Rowland, 39, and Beyoncé, 38. The three women performed together in the Grammy-winning girl group until they disbanded in 2006. Each of the singers followed different paths after the band’s split, with Williams pursuing projects on Broadway and later appearing on The Masked Singer, but the trio has remained close friends and supportive of each other’s careers. During the “Love on Top” singer’s 2018 performance at Coachella, both Williams and Rowland joined their former bandmate on stage and gave fans the modern Destiny’s Child moment of their dreams.
Two years after their Coachella surprise, Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, opened up about the possibility of the “Survivor” singers reuniting in a more official capacity.
“I certainly hope so,” the manager, 68, told Us Weekly exclusively when asked if he thought the group he helped form would return with new music. “Each one of the ladies are successful in their own right. They all have their individual solo careers. So coordinating family, careers, that’s a lot of juggling. I’m sure in due time the ladies will decide if that’s what they want to do and if they do or do not as supportive as I could be as their manager.”
The Alabama native admitted that he’s still a “fan” of the “Independent Women” singers — and claimed that what the group achieved during their time together “hasn’t been done” since.
“We really haven’t had a breakthrough group,” he added. “There’s a lot of dynamics that are different than even with a boys’ group. It’s also about teamwork and friendship. It’s not just about talent and you have to put all of that together with a team. … Destiny’s Child is a real example of failure multiple times in a career, but turning that to success.”
