Everything to Know About Paramount+'s 'iCarly' Season 3: Who's Returning, Plot Details and More

If you are looking for a dose of Nickelodeon nostalgia, the iCarly reboot on Paramount+ is the show for you.

Picking up where the original show left off, the iCarly reboot has all of the fun, humor and zany characters as the Nickelodeon version (minus Jennette McCurdy's Sam), but the protagonists are all grown-up this time around.

More than a decade has passed since this beloved kids’ TV show went off the air — and 10 years have passed in Carly’s world, too. The silly situations these characters face have been updated for an adult audience, reflecting changes to the social media landscape in the decade since we last saw Carly and her pals.

In the original iteration of iCarly, Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) hosted a web show that streamed on the Internet (also titled “iCarly”). Now, Carly is a social media influencer who’s navigating the changing landscape of her career and the reality of what it takes to be an adult.

“To be perfectly honest, when I was first asked about maybe coming back, all the first talks about it started a couple years ago. And I was like, ‘No, we’re never gonna do that,’” the School of Rock actress told Variety in June 2022. “And I called [my original costars] Jerry [Trainor] and Nathan [Kress] and they were like, ‘No we shouldn’t do that.’ And then we just kept talking about it.”

Cosgrove added: “And we came up with the idea that because we’re adults now, and all the people that originally watched the show, they were kids that grew up and are adults now like us, we were like, ‘Why don’t we make the show for them?’ They’re the people that loved the show originally and they’re really who this is for. So that really gave us a lot of direction after we realized that we were all on board and wanted to do that. And it started to get really fun after that.”

The first season of the new iCarly debuted on Paramount+ in June 2021 with a 13-episode order. A second season was later greenlit, returning in 2022 with 10 new episodes.

“I was proud when I started producing the iCarly reboot, and people started listening to my ideas,” Cosgrove exclusively gushed to Us Weekly in March 2022, referring to her role as a producer on the revival. “I love being able to help write the comedy on the iCarly reboot.”

Paramount+ eventually announced the sitcom’s third season in July 2022, alongside a vague 2023 release date.

Who’s in the Cast of ‘iCarly’ Season 3?

In this updated reboot, just about all of the original cast of Nickelodeon's iCarly reprise their roles. Cosgrove — who some might remember from her Drake & Josh days — comes back to reprise her role as Carly, now an adult social media influencer managing the realities of a widely popular online career. Kress, for his part, returns as Freddie Benson, Carly's former neighbor and the OG “iCarly” tech man. Nowadays, Freddie’s been through “a couple of divorces,” but he has kept the door open for a new romance.

Trainor also reprises his role as Spencer Shay in the reboot, picking up right where he left off ten years ago. Carly’s older brother and caretaker was a goofball struggling artist who always had a wacky sculpture that did not work the way he intended. However, things have changed a lot for Spencer since the last time viewers saw him. Spencer is now quite wealthy thanks to a flourishing art career, giving him an entirely new dynamic with his sister and her friends. 

However, Carly’s best friend from the original series, Sam Puckett, is notably absent from the Paramount+ revival. McCurdy, who played the role of the mischievous “iCarly” sidekick, announced her retirement from acting in 2017.

While Sam could never truly be replaced, a number of new characters have stepped in to fill the hole left she left behind. Laci Mosley joined the show as Carly's new best friend, Harper, and Jaidyn Triplett is also featured as Freddie's stepdaughter, Millicent.

Are There Any Fun Guests in the ‘iCarly’ Reboot?

During season 2, Reed Alexander reprised his role of Nevel Papperman for just one episode. Nevel was a regular in the original iCarly, playing a critic of Carly's web show and her online nemesis.

Carly's former doorman Lewbert (played by Jeremy Rowley) also made an appearance in the new series’ second season. While fan-favorite character Gibby (Noah Munck) has yet to pop by, his younger brother, Guppy (Ethan Munck), made quite the splash in season 2. Then, perhaps the biggest surprise addition to iCarly’s world is Josh Peck, who arrived in season 2 as Carly’s manager, Paul. The Grandfathered alum is featured in the season 3 teaser footage, leading fans to speculate about his return.

Is Everyone Coming Back for Season 3?

Naturally, Cosgrove is coming back to continue where Carly Shay left off in season 2 — there can’t be iCarly without Carly, after all. Trainor and Kress are also expected to return, as well as Mosley and Triplett.

What Happened in ‘iCarly’ Season 1?

After Carly’s boyfriend breaks up with her and starts an online show with his new girlfriend, Carly decides to go back to her roots and revive iCarly. Life imitates art, huh? Meanwhile, Carly, Spencer and Freddie each attempt to find love — with mixed results.

Carly ends up between a rock and a hard place when her ex-boyfriend Beau and new boyfriend Wes both confess their feelings for her while on a secluded island, where Beau tried to lure Carly into being alone with him. Despite this show’s story-of-the-week plot lines, season 1 ended on a cliffhanger when Carly flies away on a helicopter before she needs to decide which man is the one for her.

What Happened in ‘iCarly’ Season 2?

When Carly decides to reject both Beau and Wes, they decided to start their own web channel together, and the internet loves them … and hates Carly. In a quest for damage control, Carly starts fake-dating Freddie since Creddie is still a beloved online ship. However, things get messy when the tech genius finds a love interest of his own in animal therapist Pearl.

As things tend to go in your 20s, relationships ebb and flow throughout the course of the season. When Carly throws Freddie’s birthday party in the season finale, it looks like they’re finally might be some sparks flying between the two lifelong pals. When Pearl realizes that Carly and Freddie have feelings for each other — which neither of them denies — she breaks up with Freddie and leaves the possible lovebirds sharing a longing glance.

Is There a Season 3 Premiere Date?

iCarly is expected to return in 2023.
