Awkwafina certainly made the most of her first Oscars appearance! The 29-year-old actress, who attended the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 24, in Los Angeles, was spotted taking a swig from a booze-filled clutch as she made her way down the star-studded red carpet.
The Ocean’s 8 star, whose real name is Nora Lum, was filmed having a lighthearted exchange with interviewer Guillermo Rodriguez from Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and during their conversation she’s seen holding a jeweled bag. After exchanging a few words, Rodriguez gestures towards the bag and urges Awkwafina to take a sip.
After she does, she nods and can be heard saying “that’s tequila,” while Rodriguez puts the cap back on the multipurpose handbag.
Though many social media users were under the impression that the sparkly bag belonged to Awkwafina herself, it appears to be Rodriguez’s accessory, and one that might have been part of a Jimmy Kimmel Live! bit.
In a tweet from Women’s Wear Daily that captured the boozy moment on video, the caption reads “@awkwafina takes a swig of tequila from @iamguillermo,” and the purse the actress was photographed carrying on the red carpet is different than the tequila-filled one she dank from.
Still, regardless of who the boozy accessory actually belongs to, social media users loved the fact that Awkwafina let loose on her first-ever Oscars red carpet. “Awkwafina casually taking a swig of tequila out of her fancy #oscars clutch is just *chef’s kiss*,” wrote one bemused Twitter user. Added another: “Awkwafina won the Oscars with her tequila flask clutch.”
The rapper, who went to the awards ceremony along with several of her Crazy Rich Asians costars (despite the film being shutout of any big nominations), was on hand to present the award for Best Animated Short Film alongside comedian John Mulaney.
Though the pair’s presenting duties got some of the biggest laughs of the night, it was Awkwafina’s tequila moment that social media users just couldn’t get enough of. Check out some additional reactions to the red carpet swig below:
