Don't eye-roll! This sweeping, four-hankie melodrama packs an emotional wallop. Albert (Jeremy Irvine), an English teen, has grown so attached to his family's workhorse, Joey, that when the animal gets sold to the Army at the beginning of WWI, he enlists to find him. Steven Spielberg masterfully illustrates the pair's converging journeys in battleground scenes that are both humane and harrowing. (It's hard to shake the image of Joey tangled in barbed wire.) A superb effort.
