Lorne Michaels
Lorne Michaels is a TV writer and producer who is best known for creating Saturday Night Live.
Michaels got his start in Hollywood as a writer for The Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show. In 1975, he conceptualized NBC’s Saturday Night as a weekly sketch comedy series that’s performed live in front of a studio audience. By 1977, the show was renamed Saturday Night Live (SNL). Michaels originally served as a writer and producer, eventually becoming the executive producer.
Under Michaels’ reign, SNL has been nominated for more than 80 Emmy Awards. The show, which inspired the 2024 film Saturday Night, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Michaels was married to Rosie Shuster, who served as an OG writer on SNL, from 1967 to 1980, and Susan Forristal from 1981 to 1987. He later moved on with Alice Barry and they tied the knot in 1991.
