Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton (born Katherine Matilda Swinton) is an Oscar-winning actress. Swinton spent her childhood in London and went on to attend the University of Cambridge. She began acting while in college and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 1983.

Swinton joined a theater company shortly after graduating, appearing in productions such as Measure for Measure and Mann ist Mann. The actress made her first on screen appearance on the TV series Zastrozzi: A Romance in 1986 and made her film debut in the historic drama Caravaggio that same year. Director Derek Jarman took a liking to her, and she later appeared in multiple of his films, including War Requiem (1989) and The Last of England (1998).

The Oscar winner’s appearance in 1991’s Orlando solidified her status as mainstream talent, and she later went on to star in films such as 2005’s Constantine.

Swinton became known for playing both male and female roles and has earned a number of accolades throughout her career. Her performance as Karen Crowder in the 2007 thriller Michael Clayton earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Her notable works include The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) and Snowpiercer (2013).

In 2024, she acted alongside Julianne Moore in the film The Room Next Door.

Swinton has also lent her voice to a number of animated works, including Isle of the Dogs (2018).

She was previously in a relationship with John Bryne, and the two welcomed children Honor Swinton Byrne and Xavier Swinton Byrne in 1997. They split in 2005 and Swinton has since been linked to artist Sandro Kopp.
