Celebrities Who Are (Mostly!) Vegan and Vegetarian Share Their Favorite Meatless Snacks and Brands

As plenty of Hollywood stars know, eating vegetarian or vegan can be the way to go for health or lifestyle reasons. And while some celebrities eat plant-based diets quietly, others want to shout out their dedication to animal-free products from the rooftops. Beyoncé and Jay-Z, for instance, challenged fans to go vegan for 22 days in the intro to Marco Borges’ book The Greenprint: Plant-Based Diet, Best Body, Better World. Beyoncé also ate a strict vegan diet to get in shape for Coachella 2018 after weighing in at 175 pounds following the birth of her twins. The Carters are big proponents of going at least partially vegan for both health reasons and to help the environment. Actresses Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone have both eschewed animal products for ethical reasons for years, and have been vocal about their eating choices. Portman, who had been a vegetarian since her she was a teenager and became vegan after reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2009 book Eating Animals, told Us in 2018 that she’s found plenty of delicious substitutes for foods that she would have otherwise missed. “There’s, like, tempeh bacon, you know, coconut milk, yogurt, cheese is made out of cashews and all sorts of delicious things that they’ve figured out that are great replacements for those things you crave,” said the Oscar winner. Carrie Underwood, Lea Michele, Jenna Dewan and Ellie Goulding are also well-known vegan (or mostly vegan) stars. As Michele has told Us, she focuses on eating green most of the time for her personal health and wellness. “I keep my home completely vegan, which I think is one of the most important things,” the Glee alum told Us in 2017. “If you keep your home healthy, then, when you’re reaching for snacks, you’re not reaching for bad things. So, I stock it with fruits and vegetables.” As anyone who steers clear of meat and dairy knows, it can sometimes be tricky to figure out breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Sometimes, it depends on knowing a great vegan replacement option for an ingredient in the recipe. “I’m vegan/vegetarian and so I eat pretty healthy,” the Resident actress has told Us. But sometimes, even the pro dancer craves a meat-like taco. For that, she told fans in a July 2019 YouTube Live session, she turns to the brand Beyond Meat’s Beyond Beef Crumbles. “If you want a taco night that’s vegan,” she said, “they’re so good.” And, in the ultimate endorsement, the star added, “All my meat-eater friends love it too!”

Alicia Silverstone

The actress has been vegan for decades, so she knows how to make some delicious vegan meals with her son, Bear, who also eats vegan. “Basically we’re rotating sushi, homemade sushi, tacos, stir-fry, I make pizza, hummus,” she told Us in July 2019. Still, for those times when they don’t want to cook, it’s Amy’s non-dairy rice and beans burrito to the rescue! Added the star, “I have those Amy’s vegan burritos in the freezer as, like, a special kind of thing.”

Natalie Portman

As a vegetarian since the age of 9 who went vegan in 2009, Portman rejoiced to find a good dairy-free cheese. “I like Kite-Hill Cheese a lot,” she told Us in November 2018 of the almond-milk based ricotta. “So that on crackers is, like, it.”

Lea Michele

As someone who’s followed a plant-based, mainly vegan diet for most of her adult life, the Glee alum makes sure to have clean eats in her house at all times. “I keep only fresh ingredients from the farmer's market in my house,” the actress told Us in August 2018. “I don't eat red meat. I do eat fish, though. Our home is filled with tons and tons of fresh fruits and vegetables.” And when she needs a grab-and-go snack, Michele likes dried goji berries. “Goji berries may not sound like the most delicious thing, but I found myself becoming addicted to them,” she’s told Us.

Post-twins, the singer famously lost major pounds by following a strict vegan, gluten-free, booze-free diet to get ready for Coachella 2018. Avocado “toast” helped her a lot. “44 days until Coachella!! Vegan Time!! The singer went vegan in January 2018, six years after she first became a vegetarian. But as an avid runner, she still needs plenty of protein for fuel. Her solution is Vega protein powder. For breakfast, she told The Cut in January 2018, “I’ll shove a bunch of things in a NutriBullet — kale, cucumber, water. I try and have a smoothie every day, it’s really filling with protein powder.
