“He’s not in rehab,” the insider clarifies of the “Sorry” crooner, 24. “He sees a therapist, but he’s not in a special center or anything. He doesn’t want to be dependent on medication. He struggles with ups and downs, anxiety, depression and uncertainty about the future.”

Bieber recently spoke candidly about his personal struggles during a joint interview with his wife, Hailey Baldwin, for Vogue’s March cover story.

“I got really depressed on tour,” the “Love Yourself” singer recalled of canceling the last 14 shows of his 2017 Purpose tour. “I haven’t talked about this, and I’m still processing so much stuff that I haven’t talked about. I was lonely. I needed some time.”

Bieber went on to note that after the drama that came with his once-bad behavior, it has not been easy for him to let people in — not even the 21-year-old model, whom he wed in September 2018.

“It’s been so hard for me to trust people,” he explained. “I’ve struggled with the feeling that people are using me or aren’t really there for me … One of the big things for me is trusting myself. I’ve made some bad decisions personally, and in relationships. Those mistakes have affected my confidence in my judgment. It’s been difficult for me even to trust Hailey. We’ve been working through stuff. And it’s great, right?”

Amid the difficult times in his life, Bieber revealed he turned to Xanax because he “was so ashamed” of some of his mistakes. “Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing. It got pretty dark,” he told the magazine. “I think there were times when my security was coming in late at night to check my pulse and see if I was still breathing.”

Bieber also spoke about the “informal detox” he completed in 2014, admitting he hasn’t touched a drug since. The Drop the Mic cohost, for her part, dished on how her husband’s behavior continually had her worried.

“I grieved very intensely over the whole situation,” Baldwin recalled of the dark times. “I just wanted him to be happy and be good and be safe and feel joy. But I’m really proud of him. To do it without a program, and to stick with it without a sober coach or AA or classes—I think it’s extraordinary. He is, in ways, a walking miracle.”

One month after Bieber and Baldwin quietly tied the knot in a New York City courthouse, the singer appeared visibly upset as he was spotted in a car with his new wife.

“Justin has become a recluse and a changed person. He has no interest in being a celebrity and an artist,” an insider close to the Grammy winner told Us at the time. “He has withdrawn again, much like he did a couple years ago. He started recording music, but just stopped.”

The source added that Bieber “has a lot of stuff going on his head” and though “he has so much going for him,” he “doesn’t feel whole.”

Us Weekly has reached out to Bieber’s rep for comment.
