Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz Break Down Split, Relationship Update: ‘We've Done a Damn Good Job Divorcing Each Other’

It’s all good! Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz dished on their breakup and revealed where they stand on what would’ve been their six-year wedding anniversary. The 35-year-old TV personality introduced her 39-year-old estranged husband on the Friday, August 19, episode of her “You're Gonna Love Me with Katie Maloney” podcast as her “special guest” and “good dear friend.” The introduction quickly caught Schwartz’s attention, who confessed, “We’re still learning how to address each other in public. We’re working through this now.” The Vanderpump Rules costars, who announced their split in March, went on to explain that this week is “bittersweet” for them on many levels. For starters, the twosome are selling their Los Angeles home that they shared while married. “I don’t need much in life, but it’s hard to go backwards when you had something full of so much joy and happiness,” the Florida State University alum said, to which his estranged spouse replied, “There’s also so much possibility on the horizon.” To make the sale even more emotional, Maloney revealed that they are closing escrow on the property one day before their sixth wedding anniversary. When speaking about the split, Maloney pointed out, “We did break up for a reason,” to which the Tom Tom cofounder agreed. They also noted that the actual process of splitting assets and legally separating is anything but fun. “Divorce no matter what … it still is a mindf—k,” the former SUR waitress explained. “It’s just like [a] business.” Schwartz revealed that marriage is a “beautiful thing” and then when you get divorced, it’s “reduced to like a piece of paper that we sign and then it’s just over. … [It’s] the least romantic thing.” Despite the rocky road to singledom, the Schwartz & Sandy’s cofounder is looking on the bright side. "I won't say I'm happier than I've ever been, but I'm very optimistic and grateful,” he told his estranged wife. “It wasn’t easy getting to where I am now.” Schwartz added: “I'm happy that we're still close. The Name Game

The former couple got real about what they should call one another now that they are almost fully divorced. “When you separate with someone you still love them and you’re in public and you introduce them to someone they’ve never met before, how do you introduce them?” Schwartz asked. “Do you say, ‘My ex-wife?’ It’s so aggressive. It’s melodramatic. But you don’t want to say ex-wife. Friend feels too impersonal. What do you say?”

Maloney noted, “For 12 years we were together and we were best friends. And also boyfriend-girlfriend and then married. I think we’re still best friends, right?” The entrepreneur, however, explained that “best friends” could sound “a little unrealistic.”

He added, “I think you’re my good dear friend,” to which the podcast host replied, “I don’t like good dear friend though. … Is friend too informal? I like best friends. We were best friends. We are best friends.”

Do They Still Hang Out?

The pair further explained that they should be classified as “best friends” because they are still close and spend a lot of time together. "We're still hanging out," Schwartz said, pointing out it’s "not in an unhealthy, exorbitant way, but we give each other space, boundaries. We're still buddies, we still check in on each other."

The Utah native chimed in, “We do have the dogs. We do see each other. We were family for many, many years. That’s been a priority to us. … [To] maintain [our] friendship.” Schwartz agreed, saying, "We still got a good little unit here. Let’s keep it up. Let’s keep it chipper.”

Saying Goodbye to Their House

“It’s been such a process,” Maloney confessed of closing on their joint property. “When you’re selling a house it’s a totally different bucket of feelings.”

Schwartz confessed that “in hindsight” he realized “it was a little too much house” for the couple who, in his opinion, “skipped the starter house and went straight to our dream house.” He then opened up about his new living arrangements, since moving out of the lavish home.

“I’m back in an apartment complex. It’s hard not to be bitter, I gotta be honest. I don’t need much,” he said. “Living in a small little apartment that you have to pay $3,500 a month for … it’s hard not to be salty.”

Schwartz later admitted, “I freaking love that house. I could’ve spent the rest of my life there and been happy,” which prompted Maloney to say, “Well, that was the plan.”

Their Anniversary Plans

"I feel like I would be remiss to not acknowledge our anniversary this year because we are still technically married until later this year,” the Harper’s Globe alum told her listeners. “I don’t know if it’s wrong to?”

Maloney clarified, "I don't think there's any rules” when it comes to whether or not she and Schwartz should still celebrate the momentous date amid their split.

The Minnesota native, for his part, came up with a new idea of toasting their anniversary. "Moving forward, since we're so close, we should just go and get drunk and have a delicious dinner on our anniversary," he said. "We can invite friends and stuff."

Wedding Rewind

“This time, six years ago we were getting ready for our rehearsal dinner,” Maloney revealed, to which her estranged husband said, “Best wedding ever.”

Schwartz expanded on how great their first ceremony was, calling it his “favorite wedding” out of all the ones he’s been to. “It was magical. [I] might go back and watch the episode — not drunk though, then I'll be a sad sack,” he joked, noting, "I like the way it's preserved perfectly in my mind and I don't want to tarnish it [by watching the Bravo special].”
