Why Did Cynthia Erivo Start Shaving Her Head?

When Erivo was cast as Elphaba — a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West — in director Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked, she knew she would have to undergo an extensive physical transformation.

Since she’d have to wear four different wigs throughout the filming of Wicked and For Good, Erivo thought it would be easiest to completely shave her head. Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2024, the actress recalled her reaction when she first saw “green-scalp Cynthia” on set after several hours in the makeup chair.

“[I looked] like a little bald-headed green lady,” she teased.

Sickler first opened up about her alopecia diagnosis in September. In an interview with People at the time, the pageant queen said she began losing her hair in December 2024. She was initially diagnosed with partial hair loss, before her doctor told her she had alopecia universalis, which causes complete hair loss.

“[The doctor] basically said, ‘I’ve tried everything I could,’ and that was like a dagger in my heart,” she said. “I remember coming home, and I looked in the mirror and I had never felt uglier. My hair was all in patches, my eyelashes were completely gone, I had no eyebrows, and I honestly couldn’t recognize myself anymore.”

I think if you see yourself as beautiful and you own it, then other people will too.”

The season will begin with the blind auditions, featuring a “Triple Turn Competition,” in which the coaches try to get the most three-chair-turn artists on their teams. The winning coach gets “Super Steal” advantage in the battle rounds, which can be used to steal an artist from another team and trumps another coach’s attempt to steal.

In the knockouts, the coaches will bring back fan-favorite artists from past seasons to compete in an “In-Season All-Star Competition.” Original Voice coach CeeLo Green will pick winners of these head-to-head sing-offs, and the coach with the most winners is guaranteed a second finalist in the finale.

During the semi-finals and the finale, superfans and past artists will have the chance to vote in real time as part of the in-studio audience.

Ahead of season 29, fans can tune into The Voice season 28, premiering on NBC in September with coaches Niall Horan, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé.
