All-Star Haiti Telethon Shatters Fundraising Records

Sunday – January 24, 2010 – 10:22am

The victims of Haiti's devastating earthquake are getting a major, major leg up from Hollywood and the general public worldwide.

By Saturday evening, Friday's all-star "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief" telethon has raised more than $57 million!

Check out some snapshots of stars at the telethon in Hot Pics!

That sets a new record for donations made by the public through a disaster relief telethon -- and the money keeps coming in from around the world. The impressive preliminary figures account for donations made via phone, online and mobile; iTunes sales and large corporate donations are still being tallied.

More good news: the Hope for Haiti Now album, with telethon tracks recorded live by Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Sting, Bono, Rihanna, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen and many more, is the biggest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history.

No wonder America is the most hated country in the world. Listen to yourselves complaining that the money is needed at "home" first. Take your heads out of your selb-absorbed arses and realise you are not the only country in the world in a recession. Nor are you the only country in the world where people have lost jobs and homes, or the only country who have families living in poverty, hospitals seriously under-funded and roads in dangerous need of upgrades. But there are nations worse off, and Haiti is one of them. Whoever asked why America didn't raise this much for the Tsumani is because Haiti is closer to home for you, they are your neighbour and it is your ethical responsibility to help your neighbours. Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands came to the most aid of the Asian tsunami victims because they are our neighbours. Do you whingers even realise that all donations are tax deductible? Probably not. You've probably never donated to people in need in your lives. To the people who have donated, I apologise for putting you in the same category as the un-educated fools on here. At least the celebrities are doing something worthwhile, unlike you lot who spend time and money obsessing and gossiping about them.

One Haitian person lives on less than 2 USD per day. THEY DESERVE THIS MONEY. WE CAN ALL SPARE $5 TO HELP SOMEONE IN HAITI SURVIVE FOR 2 DAYS!!!!! Sheesh people, get over yourself. People may be poor here but not like in third world countries. At least we have WELFARE, UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS. They do NOT!!! So give a little. And if you choose to donate to a U.S. organization, than so be it. Do you!!

Haiti never had much in the first place. The island is extremely poor. Where are the charaties to help low income including homeless victims within the US?????? No effort at all....Celebrities rather give money to an existing poor island instead of poor US individuals and families. Cleaning up haiti is a government obligation....Its crazy!

    so theres no recession then!!!

I am SO sick of people saying you have to help one group of people over another. Why do you think I have to give money to an American over someone else? It is not your business who or what cause I donate MY money to! That is ridiculous!

did some research on some of the issues you all presented. I hope I can answer correctly with what I found. All celebrities were not paid, they all volunteered, some going as far as cancelling other paid engagements to be there. What the celebreties contributed to the fund, from what I read was not calculated as many had donated to many of the organizations prior to the telethon. Hope for Haiti divides the money to several of the main global organizations, such as the Red Cross. Celebrity donation went directly there before the telethon. HOWEVER some celebrities did contribute at the telethon and those were accounted in that figure. Again however the final tallies have not been determined. Finally to the Jennifer Aniston haters. Jennifer has donated millions and given her time to many charitable organizations. One difference between her and Angelina may be that Angelina has donated more $$, especially now that she has Brads money too. But the BIGGEST difference is that Jennifer is humble about this and could care less if the world knows about her contributions or not because she doesn't do it to up her celebrity status, fix her reptation, or keep a man.

OK - I don't begrudge what all of these celebrities are doing - HOWEVER - when are ANY of them going to do something for all of the people and all of the issues IN OUR OWN COUNTRY????? Our country has made these people famous and filthy rich - HOWEVER - just like Oprah - she can give millions and millions to build a school in Africa and all these celebrities are giving millions to Haiti - when are they going to help our own country - the children that are homeless, the children that are starving, the children that have no clothes, no hope of an education, ETC., ETC., ETC. - help here at HOME FIRST!!!

It blows my mind that there are people who are actually complaining about America "only raising $57million." First of all, that money was raised via ONE fund-raising event. Secondly, it's for a good cause...we should be happy to raise any money at all to help a country in need. And lastly, why are some people so focused on Jen Aniston? She's there, she helped out...whether she partied or not afterwards is completely irrelevant. And the fact that you can even sit there and judge her about her throwing herself a million-dollar birthday party? I would hope that she be able to spend the money that she earned however she wants. I'm sure none of you who are ridiculing Jen and/or other celebs have stopped your own lives when disaster hit Haiti, so please get off your high horse and do some good in this world, even if it's just NOT hating. =]

Refresh my memory..you dumb celebrities. What are we doing for the problems like poverty, and homelessness in our own country? Also- can you let me know please what we did for the victims of the tsunami? Not this much..
  • January 25, 2010 - 10:58am meg Says:

You Americans complaining that you're in a recession and that money should be raised for you are disgusting. Do you have a roof over your heads? Your family? Money, even though it might not be enough? These people lost EVERYTHING. Their homes, family, belongings, money, etc and you're complaining about a recession? That is so selfish and wrong, grow some brains and realize that you are WAY better off than the people of Haiti.
  • January 25, 2010 - 9:48am mickey Says:

Does anyone know if the celebrities got paid or received good for being at this charity event? If they raised 57 million and didn't have to pay all of the celebs that would be great -- but if every celeb, musician, etc is getting paid -- how much really goes to haiti? Just curious if anyone knows.
  • January 25, 2010 - 8:29am mickey Says:

I honestly thought with all the stars donating money too that they would be way past 57 million? Didn't the actors/actresses donate?
  • January 25, 2010 - 8:27am Tell It How It is Says:

Overitalready....I honestly feel sad for your kids, growing up with an insenstive parent who lacks any humaity whatsoever. No one is worse off than Haiti and thank God not everyone is like you and is willing to help!People have lost their homes and loved ones and all you can think about is yourself. BTW peole don't expect Americans to just fork over money they just do it on their own because most people want to help those in need, but I guess you wouldn't know anything about that.
  • January 25, 2010 - 8:13am Tell It How It is Says:

Lena I have one question for you how the hell do you know if Jennifer Aniston donated money? Just because they don't announce it doesn't mean she hasn't! And her being there because of Brad hahahahahahahaha...ya ok. But apparently you must know all....lmao
  • January 25, 2010 - 7:47am fahfrumpuhkin Says:

just how much money does it take to rebuild tarpaper shacks??? they should have enough freakin money for haiti by now to buy them a whole new island somewhere. all this brouhaha over a third world island that has contributed absolutely nothing to the world is reeeeediculous, but the media darlings will have their way. just wait until a year from now, when you read all the outraged cries about 'where did the 400 billion dollars we collect for haiti go?" because none of the money you send will ever see it's way there. anyone who sends them money is a fool. you might as well take your dough and flush it down the toilet as to send it to these moochers.
  • January 25, 2010 - 7:29am Kris Says:

Hey moron who made fun of Angie, so what if she wasn't there, she gave a million to the cause, what did little sk@nk Aniston do besides answer phones and look at her reflection in the cameras, so before you go shooting off your mouth, know the facts! And I think in order for those celebs to have been on everyone should have given million, instead of just getting free face time "oh look at me I'm helping, aren't I cool!" whatever!

Crazy Whacked Jen HOLLYWOOD Friends star Jennifer Aniston blames the breakdown of her marriage with Brad Pitt on her unhappy childhood. The 36-year-old actress, who announced her split from the Troy actor in January, admits her marriage dragged up memories of her parents stormy relationship and subsequent divorce. As a result, Aniston felt fear, mistrust, doubt and insecuritiesâ?? during her time with Pitt. Aniston says,When your parents split up, itâ??s impossible to delude yourself about fairytale romance and happy endings. Marriage actually brought up all the sorts of things I pushed on to the back burner, And threw at Brad daily." Aniston claims life with Hollywood hunk Pitt could be rough and na.sty but confesses her negative attitude played a part in ruining their romance. The actress was even labeled â??The Leakerâ?? by Pitt, because she cried so much. She adds,?Im a total worrier and not good at hearing positive things. Brads a gentleman. He totally accepted me with all my dysfunction and struggles

I can't believe America only managed to raise $57 million. The tiny country of The Netherlands (with only 16 million inhabitants) raised over 83 million euro's ( = $117 million) in their telethon in one night only!! So much for the USA breaking records ....
