Us Rating: ****

The Prohibition-era drama proves its buzzworthiness with a splashy, sumptuously mounted and starkly violent season 2 premiere. Nice-ish gangster Nucky (the excellent Steve Buscemi) continues to lord over Atlantic City, which also sees the Ku Klux Klan stepping up its deadly activity. Meanwhile, his life with adoring Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) thrives. It’s that and the other fascinating relationships -especially in a plotline about a secret powergrab involving Nuck’s beloved protege, Jimmy (Michael Pitt) -- that make Empire 100-proof TV. (HBO, 9 P.M.)
