Us Rating: **

In this plodding adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s postapocalyptic novel, a father and son (Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee) cross a devastated America with only a pistol to protect them from starving survivors. While the duo’s bond gives the dark story some heart, the movie’s just too bleak. (Sony, $28)
