Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in September 1956, Ragland met Thomas Markle while they were both employed on the set of General Hospital. The pair tied the knot in 1979 and welcomed daughter Meghan Markle in 1981. When Meghan was two years old, Ragland and Thomas separated. The exes finalized their divorce in 1987.

Ragland has worked as a makeup artist, social worker and yoga instructor. She has two grandchildren — Prince Archie, born in 2019, and Princess Lilibet, born in 2021 — whom Meghan shares with husband Prince Harry. In December 2022, Ragland appeared in the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, breaking her silence on her ex-husband selling staged paparazzi photos of their daughter in 2018.
